Thanks Flint. Its Saturday.
were finalizing our crew, looks like were gonna have a couple first timers, so im most likely playing wingman in the am. I hope to get off on my own in the afternoon, and put a slug in a fresh one.

I would favor the cast 405 I think. Maybe look into powdercoating them or getting some properly sized for your barrel. Should be able to get away from fouling. Plain base, or regular old gas checks may be an option too.

That barnes TTSX bullet looks interesting too. I would like to get ahold of some of those for sure.

The leadheads i had were off the shelf coated bullets from mbc, run great in my other cal guns, but not the ar. I think ill just stick to jacketed bullets for the ar from here on out. I have a ton of 300s and soon as i see some heavier ones at a de cent price ill buy those too.

So let me say THANK YOU guys, your input was excellent and very helpfull. special thanks to jmorris for the bullets, also a big thanks to the DLNR guys who did so much to help set up, run, and make these hunts happen.

We hunted yesterday from dark to dark, and collected 3 decent bulls, and one monster. Probably walked away with 1k-1200lbs of meat..oh and a piggy.
The weather was over cast and drizzly for the whole day, we didnt get dumped on, and temps stayed low but not miserable. This made life alot easier.

I shot two bulls early, just inside the forest reserve boundary. Our lead atv scared them, and one of our guys managed to keep them from coming out of the reserve.
On his shot they broke up towards myself and my buddy Vince, who was having issues getting rounds into his .300.
The herd of all bulls ran pretty much strait at us and stoped at 30yds.
I kept waiting for Vince to get his shot off, so they were just beginning to move again when we started shooting. Vinces first round missed, because he forgot to pop his scope cap, and mine went through the lead bulls head, but unfortunately too low, it did drop but wasnt an instant kill.
The cows broke left and tried to go around us when the first bull hit the ground. I shot another high in the shoulder, as Flint had suggested, and the bull collapsed on the shot.
Vince shot one at about 10yds behind the shoulder, and it kept going like nothing happened. I couldnt get another shot on it without shooting basicly strait at one of our other guys or the atvs.
We lost that bull across the fence. Bummed me out cause he only went a few 100yds across the pasture, and stoped again.
I ended up finishing the first bull i shot with another round, but it never got up again after the first shot.

Later in the day, Vince blew up a pretty nice meat sow.
We had just spooked a big boar(full back mohawk big), and a herd of other med ones, so were taking a break, and talking. When I looked around a tree, there were 5 or 6 more happily munching on a cow carcase. I told Vince "Hey, shoot one of those"
He looked around the tree and goes "Where?"
"No, right there in front of you"
"Oh"....Bang!!!! Dead piggy 20yds.

Vince and Terrance picked up two more bulls later in the day. Both with longer 75-100yd shots. Including a 1kish bull, the one were all behind in the picture.
Our other guys unfortunately didnt get any shots off, but we did walk away with plenty of meat. Everyone had a blast, and this was probably the best cow hunt weve had so far.
We are putting in for another round, but it looks like the hunt is winding down.
They were hoping to extend it, I really hope they do, its a wonderful resource for the community, but its no sure thing.

Again thanks all for your input!

*I have pictures and ill post them, but ive got to sit at my pc and resize them it seems*

Awesome! Was working up some new loads Sat morning and while testing them, thought about your cow hunt results with some real curiosity, I'm glad you guys had success!!!!

Looks like you guys had great success. Good Job.

I am surprised to see the animals in such good condition, somehow I imagined them to be more 'range-y' looking (being out on open range with no supplemental feed).

Thanks for sharing your adventure.

Flint.

Thanks guys i very much appreciated the advice and it came in handy.

They were really nice animals this year, plenty of fat and real clean. I think the loading in the pasture land has be severely reduced over the last few years, so the animals have better feed.
The DHHL has had some one in rounding up animals for a while, but ive heard that they have stopped again. I guess it wasn't profitable enough.

If id been thi king id have grabed some pictures of the cows that were hanging out in the pasture, thats where all the cows and calves were.

Sounds like fun and you're welcome, I figured the 405's would do it and you put them to good use!

Very good of you to have provided the 405's. I hope Remington will produce another 'run' of them soon. Right now, they are pretty much unobtainable. I'm down to about 150 of that bullet.

The Soft Point 405 should be about ideal for the type hunting (animal and distance) encountered on this trip.

Personally, I'd stay away from 'head shots' (for a variety of reasons), but if you put the 405 in the neck, on the shoulder or best of all...a 'high shoulder shot' you will anchor your animal right there every time.

They had good success sounds like. Again, thanks for being a 'sport' and supplying the bullets to him, my hat is off to you.
