I bought a pair of 1911’s for my wife and I. Foolishly I had sold all the SRP brass I had during Covid. I still have a bunch of LRP range brass I have collected over the years.

before I go down the load road, is there a preference on primer size? I’ll be running HP38. If LRP’s are an under performer, I will find some brass. I also have no LRP in stock, so have to track that down.

Large rifle and large pistol primers are dimensionally similar in diameter.
The LRP is 0.008” taller than the LPP.

There are many large pistol loads that call for large rifle primers.

If all you have is large rifle primers I would reduce the load by 10% as a starting point.

"SASS#23149; I shoot both now, and cannot tell any diff. whether spp or lpp being used."

Me too. My personal testing/comparison, (when the forums were full of complaints abou t small vs large primed 45 ACP) showed not enough difference to make a difference. 100 each, identical loads, same guns (5" and 17 1/2" barrels). If I averaged 1,000 rounds the large primed rounds might be 10-15 fps faster.

Been loading my stash of small primer 45acp lately.
I had shelved all my large 45acp brass because I could only find LPP at gouge prices.
Save everything. If you can't get LPP then trade your LPP brass from some SPP brass.
I liked buying SPP 45acp brass because up until 2020 SPP 45acp was the devil. No one wanted it, people would just give it away, if I did have to pay for SPP 45acp brass it was up to half the price of LPP brass.

Exactly! SPP cases were the water bad barkeeps used to dilute the liquor. Now, they’re the liquor.

I recently was at a local gun show and spoke with an ammo manufacture. We had a long conversation about the diff between LPP and SPP for the .45acp. He told me they did extensive testing and there just was no definitive difference in FPS. I only load LPP but have a bunch of SPP cases, Maybe I will start using them also.

It's always good to have options. When I was running out of SPP, I just switched over to the LPP cases to keep feeding my 1911 and SIG 220

I have 3k-4k SPP cases which I regularly reload. A big advantage when priming SPP cases over LPP cases is when a LPP case sneaks into my run, I don't crush the primer trying to force the primer in.

Now that I've laid in a supply of Genix SPP, I can switch back to Blazer, Federal, and Speer cases

I’m gonna need to find some spp brass. Not large primers to be found around with Columbia SC area. I know 1 place outside Atlanta that would have some ginex product.

Cabelas in Augusta had 100 packs of spp for 8.99, which isn’t bad.

Anybody got 500 PCs 45 SPP they want to sell and I will take them.

Until recently I thought all Blazer 45acp was SPP, nope, one LPP in about a thousand Blazer 45acp cases I had. Duh.

All I know is it is a pia to have to separate them. After that, no biggie. I'll admit that I'm less meticulous about picking up the spp cases after a range trip.

Yup, not many, but they do exist. When Blazer Brass .45ACP was introduced, it was all LPP.

You should also sort through your Speer and Federal .45ACP cases. All their new manufacture .45ACP is SPP

I am running about 50% SPP on the Federal and over 80% on the Speer, not that I count and keep them in different containers or anything :) Ah, retirement

Anyone recommending using RIFLE primers in pistol loads should do some research to learn what are the differences in THICKNESS of the primer cup of the various types of primers.

Pistol primers are thinner than rifle primers. There is a reason for that. You are going to have a lot of misfires if you use rifle primers in pistol loads.

This is a old guy rant, I used to buy primers for $8.99/1K
JCSC what reloading manuals do you have? If any have you read them?
