Slamfire, you and I are of the lubricated-case school of cure for most case stretch problems in rifles

[But] Do you really think the brass being allowed to stretch that very thin case wall will reduce shield
thrust to any significant degree in a revolver?

Not at 65,000 psia!

I have shot very light 38 Specials and seen the primer backed out, so the friction between case and chamber was such the case pressure was not able to overcome the pressure inside the primer. The primer adds bolt thrust you know.

If there was a Museum of half baked ideas and half assed measures, surely the idea of stressing a cartridge to reduce bolt thrust would be center isle.

Update:

I heard from Hornady support and they are of the same mind (dirty cylinder walls):

"With revolvers if that cylinder is dirty or has a carbon ring which prevents the case from pushing reward against the frame of the gun then it will split like that because it is forced to stretch in an area of the case which it is not designed to."

Headspace measures at 0.065-0.067" (SAAMI spec is 0.060-0.069").

The Starline brass I ordered finally came in. I will work up the same load ab initio and report back if anything funny happens.

Thanks to everyone for the feedback and comments.
