I want to purchase a piston operated 5.56mm/.223 carbine. I am currently interested in the Robinson XCR for the ability to switch calibers in the future with the additional kits. Then reality set in and I doubt I'd actually need/want additional calibers for this firearm. It's use would be mainly for 3 gun competitions and punching paper.

Having carried around a M-4 for the better part of 14 years I am well versed in the caliber and add-ons. I am aware of the different operating systems between the M-4 and the piston operated ones.

What are some of the better piston operated 5.56mm carbines on the market right now? Any opinions, pointers, suggestions would be most appreciated.

Thank you.

I Love my Sig Swat Patrol 556. Its as if Colt and Kalishnikov met somewhere over a cup of Coffee and designed the best of both.
It's heavier than a M4 by several pounds, but it sounds like what you are looking for.

I love my XCR. Nice problem free break in, utterly reliable, easy to clean, accurate, it goes on and on.

It will also shoot any ammo you put in it. Although its best to break it in with American Eagle or something similar. It has less kick than the standard AR also.

Just try to find a stocking dealer or you will be waiting awhile, probably.

You may want to also consider an older Daewoo DR200 rifle- they are a hybrid AR/AK that is piston-driven.

Pros: piston-driven with adjustable gas valve, takes AR mags, very similar to an AR to dissemble, often can be found used in stock configuration for <$700

Cons: limited after-market parts/accessories

Some ideas:

Premium price: SCAR-16S, LWRC M6, the upcoming HK MR556

Reasonable price: XCR, SIG 556

If you like bullpups, there are always the AUG-type rifles and the FN FS2000...
