The .40 S&W cartridge Debuted January 17th, 1990

Interesting the 5.7 is older then the vanted 40S&W.
Somuch for the "time will tell" debate

I'm intrigued by the overall idea, and some pretty high-speed folks have adopted the 5.7mm.

However, until Wolf comes out with 5.7mm ammo (which is supposed to happen any day now...) I can't justify getting a gun where ammo is 40c a shot.

If it drops to 25c/rd (like .45ACP), I'd imagine that would help a ton.

I certainly do want to try one out though.

lol I guess Im going to have to stop feeding my AR15 that Blackhills 60gr V-Max it loves so much if the cutoff is .40 (the Black hills .223 is 25.95+8.25% sales tax per 50 round box.....and that Darn .357SIG Now why did I get hooked into that....it too is more expensive than SS197 that I get on my C&R at 15.89 a box.
Shooting is alot more expensive these days period....Im reloading more and more calibers because of it.

My big problem is with price and availability. It is hard to find ammo for the 5.7, you may have to buy everything online. Also if the Anti-gun crowd takes over the FN 5.7 series will be the FIRST guns on their hit list.

It just seems to be so much easier and cheaper to go with a .22WMR or a .223 AR pistol. Performance is similar and ammo is easy to find.

The factory ammo is selling in the $17-$19 range now and I see it at all the gun shows. Last time I was in Cheaper Than Dirt they had it.
I figure if a couple more ammo manufacturers come out with 5.7x28 the price will get reasonable.

Even using the best bullets it can be reloaded for $7 a box and using cheap pulled military bullets "blasting ammo" is very low cost.

The .223 pistols are a different bird entirely shooting a 55gr or heavier bullet at 2,550 fps. (they are fun:) )

I bought the FN 5.7 because I figured I could load ammo for it cheaper than buying like a 22WMR or .17 cal.

I didn't buy the gun for defense but I have no doubt that one or two 5.7 bullets tumbling through a BG's chest is going to take the fight out of him.
(from the limited back yard testing I've done, the HPFMJ bullet turns sideways about two inches into the target and continues through the target sideways)
