Anybody have a 5" N-frame? How's it handle? How are the looks? Post a picture; the only one I recall ever having seen is the 5" 625.

Now, does anybody have a 5" N-Frame withOUT a full underlug? How does THAT handle and point? I'd love a picture of that, too, if at all possible.

Mine is just like Bob's. A 27-2 with the exception of
the grips. Mine has Pachmayr Presentation. Also have
a four inch but usually pick up the five to shoot.
Five was Skeeter Skelton's favourite and also mine.

Greeting's All-

I've got a newer Smith & Wesson 5" 629-5 .44
magnum "Classic" with the full under lug. Uncommon
as it may seem, fit and finish are perfect; with the
double-action being as "slick as a babys butt".

Best Wishes,

I actually forgot about this one (hey - I just had surgery!) until the above two posts reminded me - 29 Classic 5" - excellent shooter:

Of course that extra 1/4" is inside the cylinder window.

Both gun handle the same. Outstanding!!

(Nightcrawler, a 5" .41 would be so, as you put it, pedestrian. ;) )

On the contrary! Since, to my knowledge, Smith & Wesson never made a 5" M57, mine would be rather rare, wouldn't you say? Certainly not worth much monetarily, but then, I only paid $350 for it in the first place. You can't pick up a new GP100 for that little around here.

I admit, I'm a little fuzzy on how exactly to use the term pedestrian in the snooty, artsy, I drink french coffee and watch Inside the Actors Studio, and use a Mac, kind of way.

However, it DID raise at least one eyebrow, didn't it? :D

Anyways, about that revolver you have pictured there. You don't often see double action revolvers chambered in bottleneck cartridges like .44-40. Does the low pressure of the round prevent any problems of the cartridges being pushed out of the cylinder (or whatever bad thing supposedly happens when you chamber a double action revolver for a bottleneck cartridge)?

See, I mostly want to get the 57 shortened 'cause it's muzzle heavy. The 25-5 doesn't have that problem, but the 57 just doesn't balance quite as well for me. (More metal to it than the 25-5, I would imagine.) I figure 5" would be a nice compromise between leaving it at 6" or going down to 4".

I have an older 5 1/2" 627 'model of 1989', full-underlug, and it balances nicely.
Interestingly, my L-frames currently outshoot it.
Maybe it just needs a little TLC from a good smith...

My model 27-2 left the factory with a considerably longer, but less accurate barrel than this one from Clark, which my friendly local gunsmith further modified. Five inches is a dandy length for a revolver barrel.

Yes, yes, but much like .44 Magnum, everybody and their grandmother has a .41 or .45 N-frame. To further your eclectic image, you should search one out in .44-40, .38/44 Heavy Duty, 10mm or .38 Super. ;)

Or get a Mateba; they don't come much more iconoclastic than that... :D

5" N-frame Smith

I have a Model 25-2 that originally had a 6 1/2" barrel that I had cut to 5". Love it! I think 5" is the ideal length for an N-frame. I also prefer the unlugged barrel. Balances better for me.

Iconoclasm has its limits; .41 Mag is expensive enough, thank you, without trying to scrape together .44-40.

And not everybody has a .41 or .45 N-Frame; they musn't have been too popular, as Smith more or less discontinued them. The .41 lives on, though just barely. *shrug* Guess everybody wanted either a .357 or a .44.

'Pig, what's with the diamond Magna's on a '75 model revo?

To answer the previous, I have a beautiful 5" M27-2 in presenation case, similar to the ones shown earlier, and a 5" full-lug M625. Don't care for the lug, but that's how they come.

A S&W rarity...

Silly me, I let a Classic 5" M29 get away earlier this year:fire:

I WILL buy a 5" 629 one of these years - a great size for full power .44's.

This is my 50th Anniversary M27, with its brand new "Combat Grips" that I scored off Ebay. I have had them in the past for L frames, never have seen them available for N frames until this set.

The grips are a little too big for me, and also cover up part of the engraving on the right side - I am thinking of thinning them down, but if they are as rare as I think, I may leave them alone and get Herretts.
:D

I had one of the 544 N Frame in 44-40 for a while and really
liked it. Had no problems with extraction. Let my friend talk
me out of it. Now I doubt if he is my friend anymore. I have
to do all my 44-40 shooting with Peacemakers and Rugers.
Have a full set of 4 inch N frames in all calibers that S&W has
ever made. Shoot them all and enjoy it. Just turned 82 last
week so guess the grandsons will get them before long.

Oh <sigh> .... the 5" ....... perfection in an N-frame IMO. Used to have a M27 long ago and in the end just had to replace it - this the M27-2 first purchesed according to my documentation January 1977 ..... probably I suspect amongst the last of the 5" before they quit makin that length tube...... so ......

<sigh again> ....... it's a love affair. Shot it again today with concommitant ''grin factor''!:)

Bluing is great BTW but ... film of CLP on this pic is not constant .... lacking a bit on bbl due to careless pre-pic handling!

I need to talk to more people! :D

I like Inside the Actor's Studio! Where else can one listen to Sharon Stone
described how courageous you have to be to get naked on film? :scrutiny:

So far, I don't like full underlugs on longer bl revolvers. (3" bls and shorter are different.) I love my 3" 657, but it may be impossible to find a sweeter handling
pistol than a 4" Model 57. Byron has two, the bastard. :)

My common 625:

These freakin' N frames are addictive!
