Has anyone ever used this before?

I'm just having a hard time gathering some info about this particular gun.

Any thoughts?

WildChild,

I too have been trying to locate information on a .50 Beowulf AR 15. From what I gather so far, it looks like only one manufacturer makes them.

http://www.alexanderarms.com/beowulf.htm

I've heard good things about this cartridge. It can push a bullet weighing 400 grains at around 1800 feet per second.

The Beowulf is made by Alexander Arms. Great little rifle with a healthy thump. I have had mine just a short time and am still doing work to it but it is coming along nicely. I think it is going to be an excellent pig rifle that will be a nice complement to my AR-10.

There are other places to buy the uppers and complete rifles. I bought my upper from http://www.midwayusa.com/esearch.exe/search?search_keywords=beowulf&category_selector=all_products&Click+to+Begin+Search.x=15&Click+to+Begin+Search.y=20. There is also this place which has a lot of good info on the forums too http://store.50beowulf.com/ the lower I am using is off of my Bushmaster M-4. I have not tried any of the factory ammo but from what I have read it is pretty hot. I am hand loading all of my ammo for mine.

Your shoulder will hate you. i mean, HATE you. So will your wallet.

To me, I really dont know which one is worse; having a gun that costs a buck per shot, or having that shot hurt me like a Colonostopy gone wrong.

Good luck and happy shooting.

Thanks for the info.

I saw this weapon on Discovery Channel; Future Weapons. And I was amazed how they converted the standard M4 to Belowulf in just a few seconds.

I do have the video, but I have to edit it. If anyone want to see the video, let me know.

It's not too bad if you reload. New brass is about .60 each and about .32 for powder, primer and bullet. The first loading is about .92 per round then .32 after that.
If you don't reload the yes it is a little pricey but then you won't shoot this one like your average poodle shooter, your soulder won't take it. If you notice mine doesn't have a muzzle brake either. After about 30-40 rounds I am done.

I think 17 rounds is the most I've fired at one time, also without a muzzle brake.

They're neat guns, but definitely limited in range pushing that big old bumblebee of a bullet. At 300 yards the drop is ~42" - i.e., almost mortar fire.

ETA - There are almost always some for sale on Gunbroker.

EATA - As per browningguy, I, too, tend to flinch after a few shots.

An excellent gun for pig hunting, but not much fin for benchrest shooting. I have the 16" AA upper on a DPMS lower, light mount for night hunting (legal for pigs in Texas).

The AA uppers are also very accurate, this is the first three shots fired out of mine at 100 yards. 5 shot groups suck because I start anticipating the butt-whuppin I'm getting ready to get.

450 Marlin vs 50

How does the 450 Marlin round compare to the 50 beowolf? I have seen them being offered also and was wondering how big a difference ther is in performance.

Well for one it's a smaller diameter bullet! :neener:

Muzzle velocities on the 450 Marlin are a couple hundred fps faster than the Beowulf. I looked at several of the thumper AR's before deciding on the Beowulf. Something tells me it's the one that will outlast all the others and it just seemed to call to me more than the others. Hey sometimes you just gotta use the force! The Beowulf is cheaper than other AR's in .450 Marlin from what I have seen

It's an Excellent Rifle

I bought the Beowulf .50 Overwatch model straight from Alexander Arms. This model has a 24" free float barrel. It is a great bench rifle. That's all I use it for. It's not for the faint of heart or the person with a limited budget for ammo and accessories.

I put a 3-9x50mm Leupold scope on mine with a Harris bipod and a Turner M1907 sling. I also installed the muzzle brake. It's nice and loud just like I like my guns and the muzzle brake tamed the recoil down to about what you get from a 12 gauge shotgun shooting 2-3/4" shells with 00 buckshot.

This gun is great out to 200 yards. It will shoot as good as you can make it shoot. I am told that it's a great gun for silhouette shooting out to 500 yards.

Once I got the scope tuned in, I have been able to hit the 10 ring on average about 9 out of 10 shots. I generally go through 100 rounds at the range and reload. If you buy the gun, buy all the ammo you can afford while it is available. There is a waiting list for the guns through Alexander Arms and the ammo can take from 30 to 90 days to get as well. I bought a case of ammo, a case of brass and the reload kit when I bought the gun.

For me, I personally prefer the 350 grain JHP or the 400 grain FP ammo. I don't care for the lighter stuff.

Here's a link to the Alexander Arms web page about the Beowulf.

Here is a picture of my rifle. Try not to drool on it.

Does anyone have any recommendations on trigger systems for the Beowulfs?

Just in case I wanted to do some modifications to my AR15.

I'd not be too quick to get one with an M-4 profile collapsible stock. Not quite as comfy, IMHO.

I've only had the privelege to try it once, for three rounds. Not as bad as a 12GA slug, but it's up there.

If the customer service is anywhere near the quality of the sales reps I got to meet, then I would jump in with both feet if I were you.

I've got the McCormick drop in trigger in mine and it's very nice, around $180 depending on where you get it. I also recommend a fixed stock, I have the A2 on mine now, but I also have the fixed Ace stock that I have used which works well. I had a 6 position on it for a while, but it did not seem quite as good at absorbing recoil so I moved that to my 6x45.

I would think it would be a huge amount of fun if a guy had a papered FA lower to mate the .50 upper with, but then again maybe not:evil:

I didn't find the Beowulf bad at all with an A2 buttstock and buffer. I've shot about 150-200 rounds out of mine.

I was warned against using an M4 type stock/buffer, as they exhibited much more recoil.

Wild, the lower, and therefore the trigger/hammer etc are just ordinary AR-15 parts. any aftermarket trigger that will work in an AR-15 will work in a .50 Beowulf.

Goofy question.....is there a way/set of options that would allow you to physically mount a bayonet to a .50 upper? Seems to me that it *could* come in handy if pig hunting in the brush, in addition to the fearsome .50 round. To me, at least, if the distances for a big ol' hog hunt could occasionally be within the expanse of the room I'm sitting in, if it charges me, a bayo could seem to come in handy.

But then again, I'm already a little weird :D
