I don't use a scope on my rifle, they're iron sights.
I was wondering if anyone would know the bull diameter and the approximate backer for shooting with iron sights at the 500yd mark. I need to make some but am not sure of the dimensions. Thanks.
Forgot to mention. This is for shooting my M1 and my ar10b. No scopes on either one.

looks like 24"

the backers are usually 6'x6' i think although that may vary at some clubs for reduced ranges

(edit: i've never actually shot on a 500 yrd NRA target. i'm sort of surprised to see the scoring rings are same size as 600 yrd target.)

That's the old 500 yard target.... The new NRA 500 yard target that came out a few years ago has the scoring rings properly scaled for 500 with the MR 600 yard target.

With the old 500 yard target shooters at a 500 yard range got "freebie" points (In comparision to a 600 yard range.) because of the relatively larger MOA scoring rings..... but not any more.

Thanks, guess I'll make some, I can't find any around here. I'll have to put the old front sight back in the AR as well. The damn night sight is too wide and covers the target.

thanks, swampy!

hey what sort of course of fire would give you that? around here we shoot 600 yrds as part of the national match course (which is 80 rnds but only 20 at 600) and also mid-range where we shoot three or five 20-shot matches. are you shooting four 20-shot matches?

NRA's NM and Regional Across the Course events consist of 4 matches, one of which is 20 rounds at 600 yards. That is what you are describing.

NRA Long Range (800-900-1k) and Mid-Range (600 or 500) events (At least here in Missouri.) consist of 4 matches, 20 rounds each, all on the belly at distance.

I know that some events consist of a 5th match of 20 rounds @ distance for a total of 100, but did not know of LR & MR events of only 3 matches. Guess it's an option of the Match Director and the Club putting on the event.

The event I referrence in my tagline was the 2007 MO State NRA Mid-Range Championships.

our monthly events are 3 matches (60 rnds for record) shot in one day, and our championships/regionals are 5 matches, 3 on saturday and 2 on sunday.

taliv,

Never seen a single event that was broken down to two days of shooting. Saturday is always fully involved with one event (Usually the "main" name event of the weekend.) and Sunday has another event entirely.

The way it usually works at the ranges here in MO and KS is Saturday is an 80 or 100 round NRA event, X-Course or MR, and Sunday has an NRA 50 round X-Course Team or 40 round MR Team in the morning... then Maybe a 50 round LEG (CMP) in the afternoon.
