Lucky, I and my weapons are am high and dry in Cheyenne Wy.
Had Sandy washed all your rifles out into the ocean ( your pistols and shotguns where safe at your brother's house),
What rifles would you buy with the $5000 check from the insurance company?

Probably a scout scoped PARA Fal and a couple really nice fully tricked out AK's.

A CZ .22lr, a older Rem Model 7 in 7mm-08, a old Rem 700 Varmint Special in .22-250 and good glass to go all the way around.

Got to go with a really good Marlin 39 (pre-1936) definitely and a FNH SCAR 17S W/.308 TA11-ACOG or Steyr Scout (Jeff Cooper Edition)... Tough choice.
Fortunately Sandy didn't get any of them;)

ar15- 1500
springfield 1903A3-700 (2200)
Enfield no4-350 (2550)
mosin nagant-150 (2700)
ruger 10/22-400(with scope) (3100)
remington 700(with scope 7mm rem mag)- 900 (4000)
(springfield XDM 45 compact)-600 (4600)
Ruger sr9c-400 (5000)

man that's only half of my collection:what:... I should probably get renters insurance.

You have to start with a .22, probably a Ruger 10/22.
Coyote gun: bolt gun in .22/250....maybe an AR in .223 if those are your thing.
Western deer rifle: Bolt gun in flat shooting caliber, at least .25/06, or magnum caliber of your choice if you hunt elk. Add a BIG magnum if you hunt Alaska or Africa.
Spend the rest on an accurate .22 centerfire heavy barrrel bolt gun of your choice, maybe a .17 Rem or a 6mm too.
Remember "Only accurate rifles are interesting"...(Col. Whelen)

Homeowners generally have no more than renter. My homeowners policy's standard theft coverage is $2500. The max it can be raised is $5000....once again this is theft max. Other losses are covered up to my personal property max....If I want additional theft coverage, I have to get a separate policy that cost $1.80 per $100 per year.

$5000, would not replace my collect.
That is a realist amount that someone might have to work with. I frame the question with North American hunting in mind...

The heart of the quest is balance, tactical, target/varmint, deer, elk?
Fewer rifles with better glass?

Well, let's start with the basics and work out from there.

1. a 22 LR. Which one becomes the question. I'm going to go for a Marlin 39 without any safety. I will call this $750 though I don't actively search for them.
2. With plinking down, now I need a general rifle for hunting and range work. My favorites are Marlin 336 in 30-30 lever action. Gonna go with a Texan model, skinner sights, and scout scope. Let's say $1K.
3. Gotta have a semi auto rifle. To me the choice is M1a vs mini-14. I think I will got for the M1a and just go with standard one. Say out the door $2K.
4. That leaves me $1.25K. I will go with a Markin 45-70 pre cross bolt safety and likely have some work done to it to slick it up and remove the edges.

I could live quite nicely with these four. If the 45-70 or other came in a bit lower then I would add a Ruger 10-22 with skinner sights to work on some general marksmanship for my 30 cal semi.

Look into NRA or others for firearms insurance. It doesn't cost that much per year. The shotgun news runns and add for collectible inc and I've been very happymwith them.

I talked with my insurance agent about this the last time I renewed my policy. The homeowners limit on firearms is for Theft only. If you loose your firearms in any other type of insured disaster, they are covered in full as long as you have enough total coverage to replace everything you lost. The NRA insurance increases your coverage for theft.

I could not even start. I have a few rifles that are over $5k each. I had to get seperate insurance just for them. While it isn't as much as I'd like, I have a $35k policy for my firearms alone.

If I had only $5k to start to replace my guns, I would start with another Remington 700 SPS Tactical, S&W M&P15, model 94 Winchester 30-30, and a Mossberg 500. The rest would go for glass on the .308.

Ugh, mine have a lot of sentimental value so this would definitely be bittersweet. I would get a lot of the same stuff really, and my collection would never be the same because I would no longer have the priceless guns like my departed mother's Nylon 66, etc. Ten years ago this exercise would have been more fun because I was still building the collection. Now I'd hate to have to replace any of it.

had a house fire in APril 2012, just moved back in to the house. what your insurance gives you for lost guns/ammo is good for a few trips to a psychiatrist. It just sucks. sorry to rant on your thread.

AR15 of some sort in .223/5.56
.22 bolt action rifle - Savage MKII-FVSR
Remington 700 BDL in .30-06
Remington 700V or SPS in .223
Marlin in .45-70 (actual Marlin not a Remlin)

If I pay full retail and add appropriate optics these choices probably clean out my 5K. So will leave it at that.

I'd have a hard time but fortunately, while I have ten times that invested in my whole collection, I have way more in handguns than rifles. Although there are several I would sorely miss, some difficult to replace.

I would probably go all out for a custom rifle and replace the rest as time/money allow. What I would have to decide is what I wanted that rifle to be. Right now I'd probably lean towards a hand-built custom flintlock long rifle with all the bells & whistles or a Turnbull levergun.

You can do a lot with 5K to rebuild as long as your not a snob about it.

Shotgun : Winchester Super X 3 Waterfowl Hunter
Plinker : Ruger 10/22 Glass : Nikon Prostaff rimfire model 4x
Standard hunting Rifle : TC Venture in .308 Glass: Burris Fullfield 2 3-9
Coyote Rifle : Weatherby Vanguard Series 2 .243 Glass : Leupold Vx3 3.5-10
Black Powder : Traditions Vortek w Redfield scope combo
Large Caliber Rifle : Browning X bolt .338 Glass : Cabelas Euro Glass 3-9

That would cover you for any game anywhere with good equipment

So how much do you have to spend on one gun to be considered a snob? How can one be judged a "snob", which is an indictment against one's character, based solely on a number on a hang tag?

Mannlicher-Schoenaur in 243 w/ Schmidt and Bender glass, and EAW mounts.

That's all the $5k would get me! If any left over, a CZ452 FS and decent glass.

"What rifles would you buy with the $5000 check from the insurance company? "

What check? I have a $5,000 deductible. It keeps the payments a little lower. I tried for $10k, but the rep said it would take a vote by the board and it was too much trouble.

Let's see, just to play along, I could replace the Cooper Custom Classic 22LR and the Guerini Woodlander 28 ga for $5k with a little luck. Maybe $6k.
