$5000 to Rebuild Rifle collection

I paid about $5,000 for two really well built safes once I realized that my home insurance would only cover $2,500 if my firearms and optics had to be replaced. Like others here, I have a lot of money invested in this hobby. Heck, $5,000 wouldn't cover my optics!! There are three ways I could lose my firearms & optics .... theft, fire or tornado. I think I have the first two covered.

For the sake of discussion though, if I suddenly found myself without my long guns and optics and received a check for $5,000 I would probably buy the following:

Kimber 84M Montana in .308 Winchester - $1,100
Kimber 8400 WSM Montana in .300 WSM - $1,100
Two Zeiss Conquest 3-9x40mm scopes with RZ600 reticles - $1,160
Rings and bases for both rifles - $300
Remington VERSA MAX Tactical shotgun - $1,200

Total: $4,860

Don't forget, your shotguns are safe at your brother's house. ;)

Otherwise I'm gonna spend most my check replacing my Merkel 280, if we're bragging.

With a $5K check I would be hunting the used market.
Prices from what is for sell tonight on Armlist tonight.

1. 10/22 Ruger... $200

2. Savage 10 SA .223 Rem. Heavy Barrel $900 (10x 42mm SWFA SS)

3 .308 Savage 110 FP Tactical,heavy barrel, $600 (cheap Tasco scope)

4. 7mm Rem Mag, Savage 110 Left $650 (prostaff 3x9x40)
$A. 300 win mag barrel for above rifle. $65 (Gunbroker)

5. Springfield Armory M1A National Match $1600

6. DPMS A-15 AR-15 M4 A3 16" carbine $ 950

The Total would be $4965.

One 22 lr
two 223
two 308
a 7 Rem Mag switch barrel 300 winmag.

Glass upgrade, well time to pull some O.T.

Good point ... in that case I'd buy a Marlin 1895SBL and an 1894 Cowboy in .45 Colt in place of the VERSA MAX.

I had to Google the Merkel 280 .... very nice!!

Looks like a lot of you guys will be loading the same magazine over and over at the range. lol

Lucky, I and my weapons are am high and dry in Cheyenne Wy.
Had Sandy washed all your rifles out into the ocean ( your pistols and shotguns where safe at your brother's house),
What rifles would you buy with the $5000 check from the insurance company?

Prices rounded and reported fairly. Accessories included, but not ammo.

Colt 6920 - $1,000
-Trijicon Accupoint TR24 in LaRue mount - $1,000
-VCAS, MOE grip, MOE handguard, MBUS - $175
-Surefire weaponlight with mount - $200
-20 new Gen M3 30 round PMAGs - $280
-20 Ranger Plates for PMAGs - $80

S&W M&P 15-22 - $450
-3 magazines ~ $75

M1 Garand, Service Grade, from CMP - $650
-Ultimak mount - $185
-Leupold 2.5x IER Scout Scope - $300

Yugo 59/66 SKS - $300

= $4,695

That leaves $300 for unexpected expenses, spare parts, slight upgrades or mind changes, etc.

Or I might research the 1-4x optic more, ditch the SKS altogether, and get a more expensive 1-4x for the AR

What I am working on now would take most of it then Ammo for the rest.
I have a deposit down and waiting for an F&D defense FD308 then a Leupold Mark IV 6.5-20x50mm scope which I already have waiting, throw in 2-3 P-mags 200 rounds of ammo and it's gone, all spent on one rifle.

There is a reason I had an itemized rider added to my policy. That covers theft and my coverage for personal property was increased accordingly. My collection is modest but $5k won't cover replacement.

For nearly 20 years I owned a home on a barrier island in Florida. One thing for certain was I would never suffer a loss of firearms at that home. You never put anything in a house in a flood zone that you can't afford to loose.

2.) Ruger Mini-14 .223 (no glass)..... $600

4.) Savage 11/111 .243 (w/ glass)..... $800
5.) 2,000 Rounds .308..... $1000
6.) 2,000 Rounds .223..... $400

All I was stating is $5,000 can do a lot if let it, if you go out and have to Have Swarovski glass and a Dakota Arms 97 Rifle your not going to get much for your $5,000 IMHO. $5,000 is a lot of money but you can piss it away.

If your focus is on quantity rather than quality perhaps. Personally, I'd rather have a small collection of quality items than a large collection of crap!! But that's just me. I would hardly consider a Dakota Arms rifle with a Swarovski scope as "not much".

Swarovski glass is "pissing away" money?

Quality, expensive equipment is often about more than being a "snob". Sometimes you get what you pay for, and sometimes that expensive gear is really, really nice.

Swarovski glass on a 5K budget to replace a collection I would consider pissing money away, only for the reason of the budget you can get very good optics for less- however if you can afford better more power to you. My only point is you can do a complete collection for 5K and get good quality stuff to cover you in any of you're hunting needs or you could blow it all without blinking an eye on one gun which to me is hardly rebuilding the collection. Or maybe I'm just an ass :)

Yeah, it isn't worth the effort to deal with your homeowners insurance. Go with somebody who specializes in this stuff.

This is who I use. It is really affordable. To the point where I didn't believe it. Figure about $100 per $10,000 coverage. To avoid any hastles I even said I didn't have a safe just in case what I use doesn't meet their strict definitions. Also, you can have firearms covered at multiple locations. To me it's worth doing if your collection has become valuable enough where it would be painful to replace. For example, if a single pistol such as a Glock were somehow stolen, lost, or destroyed, I'd be fine. The whole collection I could never justify rebuilding. In fact, I wouldn't want to. I'm not saying I want to massively sell things off it's just tastes and preferences have changed and if I don't do something now, I woujldn't buy the tool again to do it. If I started doing it again later, I'd get the tool or borrow a firends a few times to see if it just a one time itch or not. Like most of you, I'm sure you all have friends who have stuff they don't use and are more than happy to go out with you and let you borrow them for a day at the range (as then I usually drive, pick up range fees, and buy lunch).

I don't hunt.

A lot of gun owners don't hunt, I reckon.

How lucky would we be, if after losing our homes to an act of nature, we could afford to spend that $5000 check on rifles...

I am not a "prepper" but a "realist" and for that reason all my eggs are not in a single basket.

I have a few "start over guns stashes" stored with select friends across the country. There is nothing exotic about the weapons in the stashes, just 3 weapons that can cover most of my needs.
1. 22lr pistol
2. 270 or 30-06 bolt action rifle with 3x9x40
3. 12 gauge pump with 2 barrels.

For less than $1000 worth of guns one could be set up for basic hunting and person defense.

Which one would you carry?

Winchester 94 in .30-30
Winchester 94 in .38-55
custom VZ24 based scout rifle (16" barrel) in 7x57
Ruger #1 RSI in 7x57
Russian made SKS if there were money left over.

Which one would you carry?

The 22lr pistol, if concealment was needed, otherwise 12 gauge pump 18" barrel with a folding/collapsible stock slung under the shoulder....

Of course that 22lr pistol would be a 1911a1 45acp with a 22 conversion kit..... without the conversion kit installed. (I have been known to bend the rules ;})

*2x PSA 16" mid-length premium carbines MOE with Aimpoint PRO--$2,250

*Remington 700: .308, 20" Heavy Barrel threaded with cap with black carakote, TacOps bolt knob, on Bell and Carson "M-40" stock green with black webbing, Harris bipod 3-9"--$1705
*Leupold Mk4 4.5-14x50mm LR/T M1 Illum Mildot--$1040

*12oz Redbul 2/$4
*Extra ear plugs $.99
Total: $4999.99

That should cover most of my needs.

Tikka T3 Stainless in your caliber of choice (270win, 30-06, 308, 7mm-08 or 6.5x55 being my top picks) w/Redfield 3x9x40. Just under $900 rigged out, this is the perfect rifle for nearly all hunting situations in North America. Light, compact, highly accurate and highly refined. My all time favorite rifle (and I have owned ALOT)
Rock River AR-15, dress it out how you like, figure $1500 by time you add toys to it. Why? because everyone needs an AR! Home defense and SHTF situations gotta be ready. Besides they are alot of fun.
Savage 111 LRH (in 7mm Rem Mag 300 WSM or 300 Win Mag) A heavy barreled masterpiece, for all long ranged hunting situations and for punching paper at 1,000yds top it with a quality 16-20 power scope and you are ready for any range shooting. Figure $1700 dressed out.
Marlin model 60 22 LR because everyone needs a 22LR. great for small game hunting, pest control, and teaching the kids how to shoot (I leaned on one) Under $300 with a decent scope and sling a worthwhile investment.
Spend the extra $600 on reloading kit/supplies or ammo and call it good, you already have all the rifles you need.
