I went to the local range today to shoot my ruger 50th anniversary blackhawk. I also shot my friends new model single six. The grips on the single six were a much better fit than mine for my hand. Can a set of grips that fit my blackhawk
make it the same dimensions or do I need to switch grip frames? Also, ruger does not make wooden grips to fit the annivesary model. To make matters worse the plastic checkered grips shred my hands with any load that has any power at all. Any info would be a great help to me, thanks guys

You will have to switch gripframes. The 50th Anniversary' s(and the new Vaqueros) have the original Flattop XR-3 gripframe. The Single Six you shot has the XR-3 RED grip frame with more space between the trigger guard and your finger. There are several folks now making wood grips for the 50th Anniversary model, but if you feel the grip frame is too small, then you should just swap out the grip frame. Be aware that you have a steel grip frame, and most all of the XR-3 RED frames from Ruger are aluminum. You can buy steel ones aftermarket, but they are quite expensive. The aluminum ones are about $35 to $40 for a new one.

50th Anniversary grips

I have a 50th Anniversary and New Model Vaquero that I have replaced the grips on. The orginal were too thin at the top and the beveled bottom dug into my little finger when fired. I also was not too fond of the checkering.

If you want smooth wood, factory shaped, with a beveled or flat bottom check out CLC grips. They run in the $100-$200 range

But for me the best I found were Bearpaw grips, they have a store on ebay, and they are 15% thicker at the top and 10% thinner at the bottom. They are not checkered and are of very good quality. They run in the $40 to $50 range.

Just had to get a new PC and when I get a newer version of Kodak software, I will post some pictures.

I just purchased a set of bearpaw grips. I will try them first before I switch the grip frame. thanks for the info

I bought a set of Bearpaw grips for a Birdshead Single Six just for fun. They fit well but I prefer to have the Ruger medallians. Besides caryC there's Klamth River too. More choices and very reasonable prices. I have two sets coming from him for a couple project guns later this year and proberly a couple more sets after that. They also sell them unfiniahed at a lower cost too.

just received my bearpaw grips.. I love them! I ordered on Saturday and the were here at noon wednesday. I might just have to buy something new so I need another set

50th Anniversary grips

I just ordered a set of Burl & Curl Maple for my SS New Vaquero and have also bought a couple pieces of American Holly to send to him.
