After getting a chance to fondle that antique Colt yesterday, I toddled on over to the rifle range and put my first rounds through this puppy.

The load was 75 grs of Hodgdon 777 ffg, a Speer .530 round ball, a T/C lubed pillow ticking patch, and CCI #11 caps.

My first target took a pretty good beating (I'd set up at 25yds). I'd found the "X" ring by shot #3 and did a bore brushing and bore butter swabbing at this point... just to see if it was needed (more than anything). I put 12 rounds through the gun and switched targets.

With the second target, round #1 found the "X" ring. After the second round to this target, another brushing of the bore and swabbing with bore butter. On the third round, I had two misfires (cap fired, but charge didn't). I pulled the nipple and picked it and the path to the charge... it still did not set off the main charge. Hmmm.... m'be a bit of contamination of the charge with the bore butter and maybe packed a little too tightly... so, a light sprinkling of some ffg into the nipple hole and reinstalled the nipple... capped it and voila !!! I wasn't feeling too sharp at this point in time and noticed it in my shooting... the next three walked further and further from center along the 9:00 position... and, I found my flask empty. I called it a day at this point and gathered up my target and a few of the patches I found. I was pleased with the look of the patches' condition too. This gun likes this load and is definately a shooter !! I'd say I got my $125.00 worth with this one !! It was a good day.

The T/C Renegade is my favorite bp rifle of all time. For $125.00 you got a STEAL!! I went to a shoot yesterday with target's from 15yds to 125yds and took 2nd place with that puppy. I use 60g of fff Goex and have shot flat to 150yds with that charge, (mine's a 50cal). Try #11 CCI Magnums and hot shot nipple on your's and you'll never have ignition problems again.

By the way, cause of the fire danger, I'm using spit patch instead of lubed, 25 shots and no swabbing....I must have really caustic spit LOL.

It likes the fffg powder too, huh? I'll keep that in mind. Wasn't aware of the "magnum" caps being offered, I'll have to look for some. "Hot Shot" nipple? Who offers those?

This gun was pretty ugly when I first picked it up. As soon as I started giving it a good cleaning, its beauty began to shine through. The more I cleaned it, the better it got. I rubbed the entire metal work with metal polish ("Peek"), including the blued, and it just started to really look nice. Fortunately, all the "crud" was just surface stuff and it came off very nicely. I love finding "used" guns that look cruddy, but just need a good cleaning. This one doesn't have "Renegade" stamped on the barrel, just .54 Cal... but, it appears to have the same features as the Renegade.

My 1858 NMA was one of those finds... it looks like a brand new gun now... and is a LOT smoother once I tore it down and cleaned the innerds too. That's another one I snagged up for $125.00 (WITH the spare cylinder).

On 777, when ya load the powder have the drum pointed down & just prior to loading the PRB, give the barrel a love tap with the palm of your hand.

I've found that when I did this & also just sat the projectile on the charge not crush the charge I would have 100% reliability in shooting my Bobcat & my Trade Rifle using 777.

I'm gonna have to get the feel of this one... and maybe a slightly thinner patch. It was taking just a tad too much pressure to start/seat the PRB. Sure gave me a god seal though. :D

The first and only deer I have ever shot with a muzzleloader was shot with a .54 T/C Renegade, just like the ones in the pictures except mine had the single trigger instead of the double set trigger. Good rifles.

Anyway, I was sitting in a ladder stand in rural Leon County, Texas (Almost exactly halfway between Houston and Dallas on I-45). Six point whitetail buck walks out into clearing in the brush about 40 yards away, and starts eating oats. I put front bead tight behind shoulder, lined everything up, and pulled the trigger. As soon as the hammer dropped on the cap, the wind shifted and I got a big gigantic dose of Pyrodex smoke right in the face :). The 425 grain Hornady Great Plains HBHP took out both shoulders and I noticed the deer was DRT, right after the smoke cleared and I stopped coughing :).

Just my .02,
LeonCarr

I had to sell a TC Hawken I had years ago.............. that was a accurate and I mean accurate muzzleloader :D I could jump a coke can all day long with it at 100 yards. One of those I sure wish I wouldn't have sold its.............

So? Gitcherself anudder one? I'm seein' used ones for in the neighborhood of $150ish.

LOL No laser sight on this one... most shots in W.Washington are in such thick cover that even a scope is overkill.
