Shredded patches after firing ?

And all of this buys him what if he's already happy with how the gun loads and shoots and cleans up? I'm serious, aren't patches disposable? Why does it matter what they look like after they're used if there's no problem with accuracy, loading or cleanup?

That's a valid question.
If the patches are shredding when first being started and he's swabbing every two shots, then if he doesn't swab the patches may become very inconsistent.

If the patches are shredding only while exiting the barrel then it's a sign that something is not right, and that's what we're trying to figure out.
Maybe that's normal for that brand of patches because they're not very durable or typical.
Unless there's something else wrong with the barrel, crown or balls, which is to be determined by a process of elimination.
I told him that he can continue using the Southern Bloomer patches.
It's up to kryon4 to either selectively trust any advice or to ignore it.
He's eventually going to need more patches anyway, and it's a good idea to experiment and learn all there is to know about his new gun and hobby.

It's also a learning experience for all of us because if Southern Bloomer patches are not durable then we want to know for ourselves too, so we don't waste time and money buying inferior products that don't meet expectations.
Then we can pass the information along to others.
We all keep an open mind, and the OP is doing all of us a big favor by letting us know how it works out.

They aren't durable because they are lubed cleaning patches not shooting patches. Give away 1 is they are square and no 2 is they are knit.

Lable reads :

"Muzzleloader Originals"
Lubed Patches
with Precision Lube 2000 Plus

.50-.59 cal .015th

They are 1 1/4" round patches solid yellow in color.

With all due respect, he said that they were round and lubed.
Southern Bloomer does make some round ML cleaning patches though.
But from what I can find they're sold dry.
