Nearby pawnshop has both of these in 3" 357. Similar used condition. Either one for about 400 buck. Which one would you go with? I'm leaning toward the 586. 586 is blued.

There both nice. I haven't handled the 586 but have seen it before. I did fondle the SP101 and can tell you it does weigh in and seems to be about right for carry.
It's a lot like my GP100. If that helps any....

Choose which one you like more. Which one suits your needs more....

I would prefer a six shot over a five shot, so 586 it is, especially if it's pre-mim and pre-safety.

The 586 is the better value and the better gun...plus it is out of production and the 3" barrel (if it really is 3") is pretty rare, I've only seen the 3" on a 686

If that is actually a 3" pre-lock 586 at the pawn shop you need to jump on it right now. They are very rare and at $400 it's a case of the pawn shop simply not knowing what it has. You could turn around and double it immediately if it's in any kind of decent shape.

If it were me, I'd get the 586 because I prefer blued to stainless and because while I like the sp101 itself, I have yet to find grips for it that are comfortable in my hand. However, I agree with the previous posters that if it will be carried concealed, the sp101 is a better size for it.

You don't like the hogue finger groove grips? I find them fairly comfortable.

The choice isn't even close for me... S&W 586 all the way. You just don't see them often and many gunshops want a premium for one (especially if it is a pre-lock). As the last poster said, SP-101's are a dime a dozen.

$400 for a SP101 is a bit high. I'm a Ruger fan through and through but at $400, I'd choose the 586 also. If he'd take $360-$375 for the SP101, I'd probably be swayed in that direction. The SP101 is a really nice carry piece.

Hello friends and neighbors // If you live in upstate SC ,in my area, I hope you bought the 3" 586. Cuz brother I'm checking the local pawn shops tomorrow.

Seriously,
The 586, especially the 3" would be an outstanding firearm in any collection/accumulitation.
I hope you like it.:D

Also Seriously,
There was a recall on the 586 and S&W paid shipping both ways to fix mine.
Despite this, the 1983, 6" is still my favorite and I have several revolvers.

I should admit I'm serious about the first part too.

586 DEFINITELY!!!!!

I have an SP101 & love it, but they're still being made.
If given the choice I think I'd trade my SP for a 586.

Oh crap, the 586 is 4-inch. I can probably get it for $380. Still a deal if a 4-incher?

A 4" 586 for $400 is still a fantastic deal. A steal, actually, assuming it passes the revolver checkout. I'd be sure to check it out extra careful; some things are too good be true.

As someone else said, that Pawn Shop apparently doesn't know what they have. 586s start at $600 where I live, and go as high as $750. The last time 586s were going for $400 in my parts was about 5 to 7 years ago.

If it is a 586 "no dash" or a 586-1, make sure there is an M stamped inside the frame--that shows compliance with a recall. For details click here.

The stamp looks like this:

I like the 586 a lot. My review: http://shootery.blogspot.com/2010/07/classic-gun-review-original-model-smith.html

My opinion in brief: If it's something you're going to have to send in for the recall, pass on it; it's a bother. If you have any thought of carrying concealed, get the Ruger; the SP 101 is fairly compact while the 4" 586 is sorta like concealing a brick.

586 without question. $400 for a used SP101 is quite high, but $380 is a really good buy on the 586.

If it's something you're going to have to send in for the recall, pass on it; it's a bother.

3-6 weeks, and S&W is known for tuning them up while they're in.

OK, story gets worse ... maybe not a great deal. Attached is a picture. Originally it was blue but somebody stripped the bluing off it to make it look stainless. Still worth it?

Hmmm... There were some nickel plated 586's. Could it be one of those? I can't tell from the pic.

It it's a stripped blued gun, I would avoid it at half the price.
