I am about to recieve some new dies in 6.5x55 Swedish. I have several manuals and am researching the load I am wanting to use.
I am wanting to use 140 grain bullets.
This is one of my all time favorite calibers for Whitetail deer.
What is your pet load in this wonderful caliber?
Thanks,
Jim

What rifle are you using? It makes a difference if you are using an original military action or a newer commercial version.

I am using a M94 that was already bubbaized with scope when I got it.:( I also have some M96 and M38. The 96 and 38 are all original.
Answer: Original military.
I love these old rifles.:)

I use 43gr of H4350 with 140gr Rem Core-Lokt and CCI 200 in Prvi-Partizan case. This is used in my original M38 Husky. I recommend using the starting load at www.hodgdon.com for work up.
You should consider using Varget or H4895/IMR4895 at their starting loads for your short barreled M94, or at least something a little faster burning than H4350. There are several great powders that will work very well in your M94.

NCsmitty,
Evidently you have a few of these "Crown Jewels" as well. Otherwise you probably would not have known my M94 was a short barrel rifle. Even though it is my favorite deer rifle, I wish it wasn't bubbaized.:cuss:
Enjoy your Swedes.
Thanks for the info.

Since you are using a M94 action, which I suspect is even older than M96 actions, you need to keep your pressures within Swedish service rifle loads.

While the action design is fine, I don't trust pre 1900 steels, process controls, or inspection techniques.

I have Swedish ball, chronographed it in at least three rifles. This will give you an idea of the velocity range to stay within.

Also, I developed what I consider to be a service rifle equivalent load in my M700. The load shoots well.

As for bullets, I have not taken any deer with my 6.5 Swedes. A hunting bud who has a M700 Classic in 6.5 Swede, he really cannot tell any knock down difference between brands or 120's versus 140's. If the shot is good, the deer are going down.

Deer in Alabama are small, 100 pounds is close to average, a 180 lb Buck was the record size for one hunting club.

aerod1,

It's always nice to see threads on the 6.5x55! What a classic caliber and my choice for a deer rifle.

Here's one that I like and plan to use on a mule deer hunt this weekend:
140g Hornady SP
40.9g IMR 4350 (1/2g below Hornady max, work up from the start charge).
Winchester WLR
PMC Brass
3.025" COAL
2,536 fps from 23.6" barrel
E.S. of 29, S.D. of 9.89
1.1" groups at 100 yards.

I use RL 19 & 22 and VV N160 for 6.5x55 mm in my Tikka. I am going to try Varget, though, with a much lighter load (c. 37 gr).
