I've read some conflicting reports about Sellier & Bellot ammo. Has anyone on this forum had any experience with their 6.8 rounds? It appears that some of their stuff is hotter than desired from user reports I've seen.
 
Try silver state armory. I got my 6.8 spc ammo from them. so far have only gotten the 110 grain sierra pro hunter.

They have many different options for 6.8. If you get into reloading. they sell brass. They also make thier own brass.

I just recently bought the rifle new and shot 40 rounds of the SSA 115 gr from the bench. Maybe I need to give them another chance, but I got more flyers than I'm used to. Also had 3 rounds that failed to fire. (very good firing pin indentation). My nephew reloads .223s; If I got him a 6.8 die, would that alone enable him to do reloads for me (with the right brass and bullets, of course)?
 
Rifle dies are a set of two or three dies depending how you want to reload (separate crimp die or not, type of seating die). You would also likely need a different powder to reload 6.8 than for .223, and you may need different primers depending whether your 6.8 brass has large or small primer pockets (both types have been made).
 
Thanks. I'll have to see if he's game. Any idea on how often I can reuse the brass specific to that round?
 
I have loaded the 6.8mm SPC using Remington , Hornady and Silver State Armory (SSA) brass.
The new SSA brass uses a small rifle primer and thus has a little more room for powder. It is also a touch less brittle than the Hornady or Remington brass and reloads better.

Most of my experimental 6.8 loads were fairly hot and I have one small batch of SSA brass that has been reloaded 5 times.

I still have about 500 rounds of SSA virgin brass that I have primed with two of three types of primers. It is good stuff.

Now that I have played around with the 6.8mm for a couple of years, I will be selling it off and starting a new project...

You really need to use a Lee Factory Crimp die for the 6.8mm if you are shooting it in an AR platform. There is all sorts of slamming going on in there...

Thanks a million for the wealth of good info. As an ex-tanker, advice from an ex-grunt is always welcome! Which of all your trials gave you the most consistent tight groups, lot after lot of your own loads? BTW, if you're putting the 6.8 behind you, would you be interested in selling your brass and dies, etc.?

Well I was in light armor as a Cav Scout for 3 years. ACAV versions of the M113s (3 platoons) and one platoon of the extra wide tracks with 4.2 inch mortars. We were assigned as scouts for legs, so they had us in battalions, companies, platoons and sections. They disbanded (converted) the unit a year after Desert Storm, so I wandered off to an airborne recon unit for a couple of years as a supposed career builder. That was a dead end job.

I currently have the rifle, brass and dies for sale as a group for sale or interesting trade... I would have to think about splitting them up. I really don't need to sell it, just bored with it...

Thanks again. Keep me in mind if you decide to sell the ammo stuff separately. I was a driver on an M-41 and a gunner on an M-48 back in 58-61 with a Cav squadron in Germany. By the time Vietnam came around, I was a Warrant in the ordnance corp. Got out in '69 and never looked back.
