Below is the section from the NRA rules about the M110. Just as with the ARs, equivalent rifles are permitted. One day high power shooters will realize who actually the gets rules changed and made.

3.1.6 Service Rifle - U.S. Rifle, Caliber 7.62mm M-110 series as issued by the U.S. Armed Forces, or the same type and caliber of commercially procured rifle without bipod, having not less than a 4 1/2 pound trigger pull with standard-type stock, pistol grip, handguard, and leather or web sling. In all courses of fire and in all positions, the standard 20 round box magazine or a reduced magazine of the same external dimensions will be attached. The gas system must be fully operational. External alterations to the barrel, upper and lower receivers, stock, handguard, or pistol grip will not be allowed, except that plastic covers may be used on the mounting rails on the handguard. The flash suppressor may be removed or the rifle may be manufactured without a flash suppressor. Barrel length may not exceed 20 inches, as measured to the end of the rifling in the barrel. The front sling swivel must be attached to the end of the handguard, and must remain in the 6 o’clock position no more than 1/2 inches from its original location. The sights must be of the standard design found on the M16 series of firearms. Rear sight windage and elevation adjustments may be modified to allow finer adjustments. No optical sights are allowed. The removable carry handle and front sight assembly must conform to the dimensions specified. The rear sight aperture and front sight width may vary in width to suit the shooter. The rear aperture may be hooded.

interesting.

so they're saying you have to put a removable carry handle with iron sights on it? that doesn't make sense. is the m110 issued with a carry handle?? i thought it was issued with front and rear BUIS. (with the front being integrated into the rail)

also, what standard stock? the one that comes with it? that's adjustable? or an A2 stock?

Good luck on your project, give us some pics later

thanks, and on the subject of pics.. we just got a new camera so the rifle will likely be the first thing photographed other than our dogs. :)

I intend to document pretty much every step along the way from the point it comes in the door to when i have it fully built "how I want it" a year or two down the road.

Yes

The stock must be an A2 style.

They want it to look like a big AR15 with a rail system type handguard.

OP,

I'm no expert, that's for sure. In fact I'm very much in the learning stage of any kind of long range shooting. I will say that with your Rem. 700 SPS varmint in .308 you might have a good rifle to start with. All I'm trying to do is hit an IDPA target from a cold bore at 800 or so yards. I'm going to leave the 26" bbl alone, I've settled on a load, (42 gr. IMR 4064) pushing a 175gr Sierra HPBT.
What I'm going to spend time on is my shooting. Figuring out the elevation and wind stuff. You can have all the top notch stuff in the world but it still comes down to the trigger puller. Get shootin! Good luck with your endeavor!

Wow, I didn't think you could turn a 308 into more of a rainbow until I read that article on an 18" barrel. But there is a big difference in trying to hit anywhere on a steel plate @ 1000 (or 600), and shooting for score in F-Class. I can tell you who won't win. And you'll be really happy when you switch over to a 6.5, just ignore the 308 guys when you hear them talking about adjusting for windage.

said i'd post pics so here goes, have three taken so far, one right after i got it and a few other bits home. and two more taken tonight after i got the scope in place.

Unfortunately i kind of ran out of budget and had to choose between getting the scope and mounts i wanted to start with, but having no ammo, or having ammo and a "tolerable for a few months" scope on the thing. so it's got a Barska 6-24x42 in weaver rings on a weaver base at the moment. Like i said it know the scope is borderline, it's simply there so i can shoot the rifle now rather than an indeterminite time in the future. And the last example of the scope i had did alright, so i'm not too overly worried.

so this is what it looks like at the moment

In my rifle case right after i got it home

Assembled adn ready to shoot (i hope)

only other pic i have at the moment, rather similar to the one above

well anyway, time to head off to bed so i can get up and make a range trip tommorrow.
