62 Colorado Sheriffs Position on Gun Control

I have never heard of anything of this magnitude ever happening. It is most definitely not something that can be ignored. I would expect that all of this backlash over the thought of increased gun control has made a large impact on many politicians (including the president), and I expect it to continue to further our efforts to protect our 2nd Amendment.

Even if the Feds decide not to care about what the Sherifs think, the Sheriff is the highest LE position in his county. Generally Fed. LE agencies like ATF, can't do anything without approval of the county Sheriff.
So the Senate and Obama can pass all the laws they want, if the Sheriffs aren't willing to enforce them and actively prevent the Feds from enforcing them, then the law becomes irrelevant and abiding by it is pretty much optional.

Greetings and Good Morning,
I just joined the High Road and must say how glad I am to come across this Forum! As my user name indicates, I am a brand new first time gun owner of a 1976 Ruger Police Service Six Blued 4" .357/.38 SPL in impeccable condition!!! (I'll post some pictures of it in the near future.)
I am hopeful to learn from the wisdom you all can share and give coaching points on a variety of topics regarding this privilege called the Second Amendment, the skills needed to enjoy shooting and the awareness needed for home/self-defense.
It was my hope to find some Colorado connections on here. It didn't take much to find this thread right off the bat! The topic actually is music to my ears and I thought it was a great proclamation from the "County Sheriffs of Colorado". After all, with all that has gone down over the past 6 months, I knew I couldn't put off taking this leap any longer.
My heart breaks for the fact that the "liberals" are the minority in reality, yet they squeak the loudest to influence the "emotionally driven" uninformed with lies about what our country was based upon.
I couldn't just sit by any more on the sidelines, I needed to stand up and be counted with the rest of you. You have no idea how I pray that Eric Holder and the rest of the administration will wake up and realize the error of their ways. I also will promote to more
that I encounter to ask jump up off the bench and into the game.
This Saturday, I'll be going to the Tanner Gun Show in Denver, so if any of you have tips on who to talk to there for CCW classes, I'd greatly appreciate the tips. Here's to our success in influencing all that are still on the sidelines.

2A was "political" when it was first adopted.

You might point out that that wasn't necessarily ALL of them, it's that the organization voted to endorse that. And there are more than 62 counties in Colorado. Broomfield is a new county.
Nevertheless, it is a powerful statement. And let's remember that this was endorsed by the top cops, which is unusual, since as I understand it, higher-up LEOs are generally against blanket 2A freedoms.

You might point out that that wasn't necessarily ALL of them, it's that the organization voted to endorse that. And there are more than 62 counties in Colorado. Broomfield is a new county.

The letter in question, in case it has not been posted yet. It was enough to change my favorable views toward mandatory background checks. I now oppose them. If experienced law enforcement officers don't support them, then it makes no sense for me to support them. I trust their judgement.

I read the document again and it looks like the wording used represents all 62 Sheriffs position on the 2A. There are 64 counties, but Denver and Broomfield don't have elected Sheriffs.

I believe the sheriffs are not going against the Constitution by refusing to enforce laws that are unconstitutional. Rather they are keeping the oath they took to DEFEND the Constitution against all enemies, foreign and domestic.

I spoke with John Cooke today, who is the Sheriff of Weld County. I shook his hand and told him thank you for supporting the 2nd amendment, and he and I got into a 10 minute discussion about the issues.
It helps that he knows me a little bit thanks to my working for Weld County with the gang kids for several years and now my role working for the State finding Veterans jobs, but I don't think he knows me well enough to give me personal opinions and so I found it even more impressive with how passionate he was on the subject. Needless to say, Cooke isn't a fan of additional gun laws.

I've been a bit nervous lately about CO. I moved here from CA this past summer, less than a week before the theater shooting in fact. Gun laws were PART of the decision to move to CO. I've been afraid lately that I chose poorly in regards to the gun issue, and it would be like going back to CA. This gives me hope.
I know for sure one was Arapahoe County Sheriff Grayson Robinson.

I certainly hope so. I have never ever heard of large groups of sheriffs openly vowing to not enforce laws passed by the legislature. This sets a precedent as far as I know of and completely undermines the power of the politicians.

I would hope that our two senators, both Democrat, received and read the position paper from the Sheriffs, and that it may influence their decisions, leaning toward voting against the bill. (I doubt that). Senator Bennett is for the assault weapon bill, while I'm not sure of Senator Udall's position.

While LE has discretion in which laws they choose to enforce, they do not have the power to decide or declare which laws are unconstitutional. That is left to the judicial branch of government.
I see this as a dangerous trend; a clear misunderstanding of our form of governance in this country.

I agree completely that this is a dangerous trend.
What I see is the frustrations of the lower rungs of the government closest to the people as the cohesive bonds are starting to fracture.
This ain't good. But if the local Sheriffs are going to be on a side you damn well want them on your side. As things were fracturing to pieces during prohibition the central government eventually relented and the locals prevailed.
Unlike Mexico or Colombia or Spain there are no Federalies here. At least not enough, not yet. So local sheriffs weild enormous power. At least they do outside the major metropolitan regions. I'm not sure there's a sheriff in NYC. And the MA State Police may as well be the Waffen SS when you see them.
But in the "fly over" country sheriffs are not to be ignored.
