New and a possible problem

Hi All
I am new here (well not really...up to page 70 in the posts). But this is my first post.

I bought a new 442 4/1. I love this gun :)

I've run 150 rounds through it. But also have dry fired (with snap caps) 200 times a day since I got it...yep I count.

The trigger is much better and my aim is more steady.

But every once in a while when I pull the trigger it goes (for lack of a better way to describe it) "clunk". Its like the cylinder doesn't turn right. I pull the trigger again and its fine. Its only happened with dry firing.

Any ideas ?

Joe

JoeH,

I'm just taking a quick stab, when it happens are you sure you are resetting the trigger all the way?

Some times when I dry fire, rapid shots, I've found that I have a bad habit of not letting the trigger reset all the way before pulling again, when this happens the cylinder rotates but the hammer doesn't go back to strike.

Hi Speedyleion

I'm not sure. I don't rapid fire and am trying hard to keep all trigger pulls the same.

I just tried to do that on purpose. I can't seem to keep it from resetting.

Hey guys got my new to me 642 Saturday. Took her out to dance and found that I haven't shot a revolver in a very long time as my grip was set for shooting my Glock, and I tore some skin off my thumb. Then I took a chunk out of the first knuckle of my trigger finger when the gun jumped a little. So my question for the group (this may have already been stated I don't have the energy to try and read 150+ pages tonight) I have a large hand and actually have to stick more of the second knuckle into the trigger guard to get a decent trigger pull. Does anyone know of a grip that fills the hand, and is about the same size as the stock rubber grips on the 642. I would like to pocket carry as the gun is a back up on duty and a primary off. So not much longer just fuller. If I am not making sense please let me know so I can attempt to clarify my needs. Thanks for your time, im gonna keep reading and looking.

Pete

Welcome John&AndysDad! I'm sure you'll get a lot of good suggestions when the clan joins in...but until then....

Check out the link below my sig line and the grips I'm now using (shown a page or two back.)

Ok, so Ive searched to no avail. My 642 has the stock rubber grips, and I love the size and feel but I just wish the rubber covered the backstrap. Does anyone make something that is the same size and covers the backstrap, I dont want the oversized Hogues-I had a pair and I didnt care for the extra length. Ive seen some on a Colt or Taurus .38 snubby, will those fit a 642?

Thanks in advance guys!

JAguirre thats what I am looking for too. If you find anything let me know. Also can you pocket carry with wood grips on and do they help fill the hand better than the stock grips, currently on the 642 ?

John&AndysDad...I havent attempted to pocket carry with wood grips, nor have I shot the 642 with wood grips, so I couldnt tell you, sorry. I had these http://panteraguns.com/catalog/images/hogue_60000.jpg on the the 642 for a while, but I went back to the stock boot grips instead. The Hogues extended length made it a PITA to pocket carry, they would be perfect if they were the same size as the stock grips.

I ,like many wanted to dress up my J-Frames, so I put redwood grips on both the 637 and the 642. I then proceeded to drop the 637 twice during transfers from pocket to and from trunk safe (COM) It was a wet day and my hands were damp. After dinging the frame (not critically, but enough to show) on the 637 I went back to rubber grips on both guns. I lost the gun just transferring it and I had nightmares of what could happen on a panic draw (gun flying into space!) There is so little there to grab that I feel I need the more positive grasp afforded by the rubber grips.

Someone on another network pointed out that today is the birthday of the 642 Club.

On May, 13, 2005, fiVe wrote this post to begin this thread.

And like a battery-driven bunny, it just keeps on going.

Now, where's that champagne?

Wow, check out the number of posts on this page
from club members that've been around for a long while.

Now if we could only get JT in here.

<shouts> "Hey, JT! You around?"

Interesting that on (or near) the club's birthday,
Smith Wesson unveiled a brand new web site.

Clearly, they did it to coincide with the club's 5 year birthday. :D

Pretty spiffy.

Check it out, starting here with the 642.
You'll be able to find your way around from there
using the menu at the top.

Take note: they actually divide their revolvers into categories J, K/L, N and X.

I might question that K/L combo (why not separate?), but still pretty cool.

Here's a statement from that page on the 642:

The Smith & Wesson J-Frame has become the most popular small frame
personal defense revolver on the market with the help of THR's 642 Club.
No, really, it's there; or at least it was. I swear.

Guess that's why the MSRP is now US$901. ( :what: )

That's with CT 305 grips....but still....

M&P 340 $980 and with CTs $1272. :scrutiny: Glad I got mine three years ago!!

Where is jt1 anyway? Probably skulking around Afghanastan doing super secret things.

Wow, weird!

I just realized I picked up my new 642-1 Friday, on the fifth anniversary of the 642 club!

I will hopefully get to the range monday or tuesday!

I got this no-lock little gem for 340.00 out the door. I traded a hungarian FEG PA-63 in on it.

Question: I'm sure its there in the first pages of this massive thread but I've got bronchitus and a sinus infection and need to lay down- can I dry fire without snap caps? Any tips for a new 642 owner?

Carry my 642 EVERY day. Shoot it almost EVERY weekend. Gonna get my son either a 642 or a 442 for when he goes out walking after work/dinner. God must love us because if he did not, man would not have designed or built the 642.....IMHO

Yes. No problem.

Does this apply to all j frames? I use snap caps but am just curious. oh and great thread i don't have a x42 but i have a 638. I think i will pick up a 442 in the coming months as a backup though.

It applies to all center fire weapons.

Dry firing is only prohibitive in rimfire weapons.

Having said that, there's nothing wrong with snap caps.
They get one familiar with reloading.

Taking my new 642-1 to the range tomorrow! Woo-hoo!

I'll let you all know how it goes! Dry fired a ton tonight and cleaned it up for the range.

That new bodyguard looks pretty cool, I like the grip angle. However, LOOKS wise, I much prefer the 642...
