Welcome to the 642 club! Don't apologize for your information about the cell phone carrier used to carry speed strips. That's what we're here for. Any and every piece of info. we can gather about our CCW's is much appreciated and pondered for our own situations. Personally, I am not carrying speed strips, but am considering it. The bit of information you just gave will be helpful.

Sunday Range Report

Wife and I did the early church service today, then came home, tossed the range bag into the van, and headed out to do a little shooting. We started at 7 feet to get into the zone, then pushed out to 15 feet (5 yards), and finally 21 feet (7 yards).

She was shooting only the .22LR S&W 41, her favorite arm. I spent the first half hour alternating the 642 and the 41; the second half hour I alternated the Colt .45 1911 and the 41.

Well, at each distance, she whupped my tail. I've been to the range 3 or 4 times solo since she was able to go along last. That extra practice is supposed to mean something, right? Still, until the last four magazines (10 each), when she was getting tired, her groups with the .22 were consistently about 2/3 the size of mine. And her accuracy is right on, too.

As far as the larger calibers - My 642 groups were about 1 1/2" in close, and about 3" at 7 yards. Plus, I was shooting low, a lot. I may be anticipating the recoil, again.Gotta work on that. Not great, and I have done better.

Switching to the Colt, my accuracy and grouping both improved markedly. Amazing what a full length barrel can do for you! No shooting low, and tighter groups.

After putting 25 rounds of .38 through the paper, I fired off one cylinder full of my carry rounds, Remington .38 SP +P SJHP (this is what the local Wally World stocks). Dear wife immediately commented on the louder bang compared to previous sets.

For the trip home, I donned Dad's USAF holster and wore the 642 full of +P. Wife noted with comment and no complaint. Just like last time, I saw no reaction, and got no comment at the restaurant, gas station, credit union, or grocery store.

Out on the highway I thanked her for going out today with me. She said she had fun, and was pleased to come out to beat my butt, and reminded me she is her father's daughter!

Darn, I hope I can get her to let me keep hanging around.

My wife typically out shoots me.. She out shot everyone a the Sheriff's Dept where she was a Deputy years ago.

http://home.bresnan.net/~buflerchip/lawenforcement.htm

That was 35 years ago. She would out score all of the men, and about the time they finally would speak to her again it was time for Quals again.

She can beat me at throwin' a Tommyhawk too!! She has won hawk throwin' contests in 3 states.

When she decided she wanted her CC permit, I went to the class too for fun and review.. We out shot every one there and she out shot me.. Her targets had the instructor cadre's full attention..

I just stood back and grinned.

She's a keeper and I don't ever worry about who's got my back :)

Just to keep this on subject, she carries a 642 and a Seecamp .32.

I've had several people tell me that the grips on the x42 will need to be replaced with wood grips as it will clear clothing better than the stock grips. Has anyone here had any issues at all with the stock grips getting hung up on clothing/pockets?

New grips

Just replaced the factory Uncle Mike's boot grips today with the Hogue Bantam rubber grips. What a difference!

Love the feel and the texture. The cobblestone gives a better feel and purchase than the checkered rubber ones. I also think highly of the palm swells that give the grips more contour versus the near flat panels of the grips that came on the gun.

Looking forward to going out and ripping a few rounds through it tomorrow to see how it absorbs recoil. Anyone on here have any comments on the Batam grips, good or bad? I'm enamored with mine. Such a simple thing for $17.99 just made this gun that much better.

Thanks for the warm welcome so far. Everyone here is top notch.

I have been waiting for my Fist IWB holster to arrive. I have one of his holsters for my Glock30 and think it's great. Looking around I found a good deal on a Blackhawk Askins holster and got it so I thought I would give a quick review. Fit & finish is very good. soft black leather and clean lines. It had a tension screw, a reinforced mouth and not much else. Very simple I like that. It rides like a good hair cut High & tight. I can hide it with nothing more then a T-shirt. It is very comfortable even when driving with a seat belt on. I have not taken it at the range yet I hope to soon.

What's the status on this?
Hogue, Inc.

[email protected]

To whom it may concern,

This petition is to request that Hogue Inc. investigate the possibility of producing a modified version of the S&W J-frame rubber monogrip, product code 60000, to a shortened model that does not extend below the bottom of the frame as does the current product. While the Monogrip is an excellent product used by many of us we believe the need for a modified version of this grip exists.

The purpose of this request is to fulfill the need for a more concealable combat style grip that provides the backstrap cushioning of the monogrip while maintaining the contours of the original product in a shorter version. This is what we need when using maximum power loadings in modern, lightweight S&W J-frame revolvers.

The passage of laws allowing Concealed Carry Weapons by many states in recent years has resulted in the S&W J-frame becoming the best selling revolver produced by S&W. The introduction of new lightweight versions of this revolver may justify development of the suggested product.

Thank you for your consideration

That's a great idea. I'm sick and tired of the web of my hand getting bitten every time I light off a +P load plus I think it would fit my hand a lot better. The stock grip is way to short front to back and I can't see where adding some rubber behind the top of the backstrap would hurt concealability much at all. I also agree that the length should be limited to the stock 2 finger grip. Good work guys. I need one of these. NOW.

Also, am I correct that the Pachmayr Compac grip has the covered backstrap but it's longer top to bottom than a stock Uncle Mike's so it's not as concealable? Maybe have to get out the grinder.

Just stopping in to place my 200th post in the Club.

Greetings to all of the new club members!

Each and every member seems to bring more information / theories / experiences to the table for the benefit of all. I know I learn something new every time I visit. The 642 Club is indeed an amazing place.

lg&m: Could you give us a picture of the Blackhawk Askins holster? Their web site only shows an automatic, so I'm curious to see how the J-frame fits.

Thanks much,
Harpo

Since we have now 5000+ posts i.e. (Part 2).Makes me wonder how many 642 gun sales S&W has gotten from this Forum? I'm sure this has been asked before.Just thinking out loud!

An hypothesis about front sights

First, welcome to all the new members.
The archives (part 1) are strongly recommended reading.
Think of it as a novel about an air weight SD revolver,
and you just wrote yourself into the story.

I've been trapped at work for ten days
by a demanding mistress called "the business".
I'm making progress, and still breathing, so it's OK.

During some breaks, I've done some reading here,
and have been thinking about sights on the x42.
(Especially after seeing Riceboy's groupings.)

It's no secret that I lust after an M&P 340.
x42 is fine. Love it. Will keep it.

But I want an M&P 340.
(Thanks to DA for years of diligent work convincing me.)

Several factors play a role in my desire for a 340.
I won't list them all here (yet),
but I propose to discuss one of them: the front sight.

Being a poor person (Feb rent is covered, March isn't yet),
I spend a fair amount of time thinking about
how to improve things on a shoestring budget.

When it comes to "improve" with my guns,
it means how to make them more functional.

With my x42, that means getting accurate
target acquisition rapidly.

I've got the grips I like. (Hogue Monogrips)
Holster is fine for me. (Desantis Speed Scabbard)
No problems with ammo. (Right now, Speer Gold Dot 135 gr)

But I've never quite been happy with that ramp front sight.
There's always been something ... ambiguous about it.
Finding the top of the blade during target acquisition
leaves something to be desired for me.
I haven't painted it yet, but my gut tells me that even
with bright paint, that sloping edge will still not offer
the most positive sight picture.

Yes, I know having a rounded ramp decreases the probability of
snagging on clothing when coming out of a pocket.

But as I've stated 1,642 times, I don't pocket carry. I OWB.

So, I've begun to question that front ramp sight.

Check out the pic below of the M&P 340,
and compare it with your x42.

Note that where as your x42 has a ramp front sight,
the M&P 340 has a steep angle blade mounted on a ramp.

Hypothesis: that steep angle blade
will result in faster target acquisition
than a stock x42 front sight,
especially if there's a bright dot
on that steep rear blade face.

That's a testable hypothesis.
Results could be somewhat subjective,
admittedly, so it may not be definitive.
But it could lead to something of value.

If a steeper front sight did offer faster target acquisition,
modification of the x42 front sight couldn't be that difficult.

Thoughts?

Pure luck or something

That grouping shocked me big time. I can shoot tight groups with my 1911, but didn't expect to group that tight with a pistol this small.

I spent quite a bit more time than I normally would have going through those 50 rounds, and added 10 rounds of Gold Dot on top to see how they handled. I tried various trigger pulls with the 642 to see how the gun would handle; everything from slow, controlled shots to rapid pull-the-trigger-as-fast-as-I-could-after-sight-picture-was-obtained shots to see what the gun would do. I staged the trigger for a few shots (not a big fan of that) but mostly stuck to slow, controlled fire to get a feel for the DAO trigger.

The grouping was shot at 5 yards during rounds 30-40 (5 rounds at 2 yards; 5 rounds at 10 yards; 20 rounds at 7 yards; 10 rounds at 5 yards; then back to 7 yards for the final 10). The Gold Dots were also fired at 7 yards.

I was tempted to get the CTC 405's for this pistol to aid in shot placement, but after buying the Hogue Bantam's today, I think I'll just save my money and get a really nice holster and ammo to practice. When it comes down to it, shooting with the sights and/or point shooting probably makes the most sense for me. The CTC's would've been something fun to have on the pistol, but not necessary.

Yes, the front sight sucks, and yes, I would prefer something a little more robust because that's what I'm used to and that's what my eye finds quickly. But it is what it is, and after proper alignment and slow, methodical pulls from an isosceles stance, I guess I'll just have to get used to this front blade. I haven't considered painting it and I probably won't. Nematocyst - I'm in the same boat you are. How to improve the front sight!?!?!? Not sure yet, but I'll have to think about it and get back to you.

As for this pistol - it's a keeper. I don't expect all my days out with it to be like the day I had Friday, but I won't complain if I happen to tear up another target like the one I brought home. ;)

Darn you guys for helping me decide to get this 642! Now I just have to find a name for it ... (uh, anyone else name their pistols?)

Hello all,

I've been thinking about going the snubby route for a while now.

To help me make up my mind what would you folks say are the ten best attributes about the x42s?

Does the lack of a sixth shot really matter? (Taurus has a 7 shot gun only slightly bigger than the x42)

And what are the top skills I need to work on in order to be proficient with a snubby?

Thank you,

Warren

P.S. more pictures please.

1000+......this sounds familiar

I'm not surprised that we've exceeded 1000 posts in Part Deux. It's all part of the standard the 642 Club has established. Thanks to all (lots of newbies--that's a good thing!) who make the club what it is. We're all about the 642 and so much more.

Let the posting continue.....

Humble regards,

6th shot? Well that's personal. Around town where I know I live in a low crime (damn near no crime) I feel fine with the 642 5 shots and a speed strip in my pocket.

Should I go to an unfamiliar city or "Larger city" the 642 moves to BUG status and the GLOCK or SIG become the main side arm simply more ammo larger firepower. Still the 642 is small enough to ride in a rear pocket.

Skills set for me was slow steady trigger control, even pressure was a great help. Also I'll tout the pros of a Crimson Trace Laser Grip, what a difference it makes as a sighting tool.
Well worth the cash investment IMO.

- Welcome to the 642 Club², Good to have you with us.

Iggy
- Thanks for the link, there is very little doubt you have the most interesting life and stories in the 642 Club.

TBT - IMO the superior grip provided by the rubber grips outweighs the slight probability of getting hung up on the draw, I have had no problems and remember that most of the time your hand will be covering the grip when you draw.

ALL - Shooting nice tight groups on paper is fine, but remember:

jt1, thanks again for the response.

As far as the CT grips go, what I can't get past is the size of them. They not only look "odd" to me due to the size (looking odd isn't enough to disqualify them from consideration) but they seem like they might add too much bulk. They are obviously longer and they also stick out at the back too. I dunno.

Anyone notice that Buds is listing a bunch of "new" Smiths on their site? Several I've never heard of and some I knew to be discontinued. None can be found on the SW website. Do they know something that we don't know in regards to Smith launching some of these again?

TBT

They are obviously longer and they also stick out at the back too. I dunno.

The grips shown in your photo are the model Crimson Trace 305. They are the larger of the two versions available. The smaller of the two (see post #1017) is the CT model 405.

The reason they "stick out the back". The backstrap is covered with the grip and no metal to web contact. That pocket and rubber are designed to absorb a portion of the recoil. The full grip on the 305s provide all three fingers on the grip whereas the 405 is two finger grip with one tucked under.

If you own those grips and want to sell them let me know as I am about to add a set to wear with deep pockets on the X4X.

I don't own any man. I'm in the process of picking up an x42 (probably next week if my schedule permits the travel to the local shop which is a 45 minutes drive) and wasn't sure if I wanted the CT version or the regular version. What comes stock with the 642, the 305's or the 405's?
