David, don't beat yourself up.
Bottomfeeders have their place.
Besides, you redeemed yourself with this:

I clearly need to spend more time with the 442 and 642
Don't we all?

And to repeat G'man's words:

And as always a great thanks to FiVe for starting it all on:

All - 2500 posts and 100 pages in part two...amazing, yet it seems to be getting routine. I think it's a testament to a great gun and the finest bunch of folks on the net... I am honored to call you all friends...The original 642 Club thread now resides on page 59 of the archives, perhaps after part three or four or one of the following parts thereafter it may be deemed worthy to be installed as a sticky...we shall see

Johnan - Steel targets cannot be made safe for CQC training. We have been using plastic reactives for years and they are safe even at contact distances. The link below is one provider of said targets, there are others available as well. You could probably go to a local plastics supply house and buy scrap and make your own and save some money. I belive they are LDPE or MDPE but there are probably other types of material that will work as well, the plastic guys should know. They last quite awhile, 300/500 rounds or more with round nose, and a day or two with HP 158's and wadcutters. They don't care much for 00B or slugs though...

Nem - 8000...:)

...but some of the 442 shots were 2-4" apart. 158 gr +P SWCHP, so the problem is not ammo!...

davidconatser - At combat distances a 2-4" spread with a snub and 158's is not a problem at all AFAIAC. If you can do that under stress I don't think the BG is gonna be calling any flyers...... AK's and XD's......

glockman19 - Thanks for the data...it is correct :D

...I just checked. No more sparking...

Boomerang - Dude, No sparks?...Bummer...

DA - Well Said, my friend...

Greetings all!

I've been experimenting with grips once again, and thought it wise to give Stephen A. Camp's suggestion of Precision Gun Specialties' Hideout Grips a try. I ordered up a set of the polymer grips from Midway, and anxiously awaited delivery.

When the package arrived, I tore into it knowing up-front from reading the Hi Powers and Handguns article, that the grips would have to be modified to work with Speedloaders. I usually carry Speedstrips, so I left them "stock" for the time being, and installed them posthaste.

642PGS01.jpg

The Hideouts won't win any beauty awards, but I really like the texture and feel of these grips. They fill the hand nicely, offering a firm grip without being either slick or sticky. Since they're black, they do a better job of hiding the butt of the little J-frame when "in pocket" then the stags I removed - a nice touch to be sure.

After giving these grips the good old college try for a few weeks I have to say that (in my humble opinion) they are exceptional pocket revolver grips - bettering any others that I've tried by a healthy margin. They also absorb felt recoil well for a hard-surface grip.

Since any CCW revolver grip absolutely must be able to accept reloads via Speedloader, I broke out the Dremel and a square of 220 grit and went to work. Less than 10-minutes later the left-side grip had been whittled down to an acceptable size. A great thumb rest is an added benefit of the modification. Actually, I realized after using the Dremel, that sandpaper would have sufficed - the polymer is soft enough to modify quite easily.

My 642-1, now equipped with Precision Gun Specialties' Hideout grips weighs in at a svelte 14.5 oz. - a weight savings of 1/2 oz. over the standard grips.

Thanks for the report RD. I'm surprised those wont work with a HKS in the original configuration. I'll have to give some a try.

They sure don't look as good as the stags!

What makes me feel more secure than political speeches?

An X4X in a holster on my side.

<sound of crickets>

An X4X by my side made me feel safer while listening to the political speaches...

Of course, being transient at the moment, that was mostly because I was listening to the speeches in a parking lot.

Sure made me feel better, though. :D

rdrancher - Great report on the Hideout Grips. Looks like you did a real good job on the speedloader mod, and as Photoman says, they sure ain't no stags...glad they work for you, but I think I'd be hard pressed to find anything that works as well for me as the Bantams

fxstchewy Welcome to the 642 Club. What would you "Judge" the felt recoil on that little cannon to be in comparison to the 642? and the difference between .410's and .45?

- Until the panel is whittled down further than you'd ever think that you'd need it, the rounds get stuck and won't even allow removal of the loader. I got it stuck so bad the first try that I had to remove the grip panel.

jt1, the judge has less recoil than the 642, the 410 shot has more kick than the cowboy load 45 lc's, I tried the Fiochi shells but all they are good for is locking up the cylinder, remington & winchester work fine. I bought some Georgia arms 200g gold dot ammo in 45lc and it is more like standard loads in a 642, this is the ammo that I will keep in it, it ain't a target gun.
by far the Buffalo Bore 38+p ammo in my 642 has the most recoil of any that I have shot, I carry Blackhills HP in my 642. I like the 642 club and all of the info found here, The 642 is by far my favorite gun. Chewy

My first post, so I will now admit I am one of the countless people who bought a 642 because of the knowledge and passion for the gun shown by the 642 club people. I am also new to the world of firearms in general, so this may be a real rookie response, but better safe than stupid. I tried to get an answer from S&W customer support via email on Weds (9/3), then 24 hours later I tried a phone call (I was told to wait another 24 hours for an email response), and then I sent another email Friday (9/5). I still have nothing back from S&W support, and this bothers me greatly. I am going out of town for a week, so I hope someone here could let me know if I have a problem with my new gun. I have fired a total of 100 rounds of American Eagle .38 Special 158 Grain Lead Round Nose (item AE38B) through the gun. When cleaning it, I had a patch snag on a burr on the barrel. I removed the burr by rubbing a wooden dowel across it, but felt this was not normal and that is the reason I contacted S&W support. Here are pictures of the area. All opinons, suggestions, and advice welcomed.

If the burr isn't on the inside of the barrel it shouldn't be an issue other than the aggravation of shoddy workmanship. I can't tell for certain from the pictures, but it appears that you don't have a consistent height of the barrel above the frame; if this is the case I would definitely contact S&W about this as it will affect accuracy.

Thanks, that makes sense to me and I appreciate your help. BTW, I moved from northern Ohio 3 years ago and no, I don't miss the snow and rain one bit! However, I do miss all my Ohio friends.

Lead shavings have known to be hanging on the forcing cone edge - usually from where the fc was length sized in situ - the roughness takes up some lead. A good brass brushing should get rid of it from that fc edge. I wouldn't worry about it. As far as the level height, the important measure is the fc's edge parallel nature to the cylinder face, which will likely have some carbon/lead exit bore rings on it due to the LRN bullets. As the 642 has a SS cylinder, most fairly decent cleaners are okay - like Hoppes #9 or BreakFree with CLP. Soak the black areas... wait... soak them again - then brush with a nylon brush - most of the ring should fade away - especially any thickness. Then, use an old fashioned automotive feeler gauge, little shims calibrated in thousandths, between each side of the frame to measure between the cylinder and the forcing cone. They should be the same on both sides - and between .004" and .010", to meet S&W's criteria. The important measure is the consistency from one side to the other, indicating the cylinder face is parallel to the fc edge. If it's okay, don't worry about it. The cheap 130gr MC ammo at Wally World is cleaner shooting - good to familiarize yourself with it.

What you have, admittedly, is S&W's best seller - and least expensive - revolver. It is still every bit a S&W - great warranty and everything. Enjoy it - but, if you feel it isn't correct, call their 800-331-0852 number for a pick-up label - s/h and the call are on them. Some folks have even gotten their 642's refinished! Admittedly, they have had some thin coatings - and probably should warn more against brake cleaner, etc, useage as a cleaner.

Stainz

Frank, I am sitting here right now watching OSU stink it up against OU. Tomorrow I will get my first dose of annual Browns disappointment. I am going to go squirrel & dove hunting tomorrow; may shoot my 642 as well as I haven't shot it for quite awhile.

Frank - Unload your 642, close the cylinder, and shine a good white light at the barrel/forcing cone & cylinder juncture. You should be able to eyeball the clearance to determine the uniformity of the clearance.

Wow. I make one simple post and the whole system crashes. Sorry everyone, I didn't expect that to happen.

308win: OSU came through in the 4th qtr but it did get a bit scarry, and the Browns, well who knows what team will show up. I did as you suggested with the white light at the barrel/cone, and the gap appears a tiny bit slanted to my presbioptic eyes. I think it is time to invest in a feeler gauge as Stainz suggested. But, that will need to wait a week because I am off to Vegas to improve their local economy. Then again, there might be a S&W gunsmith in Vegas that can take a look at it.

What caliber do you carry most for SD?

Go here to offer your opinion.

(At the moment, 9mm and .45 has the edge.)

{Added the following evening by edit:
.38 spl has a tiny 1% lead over 9 mm,
and by 2% over .45 acp ... at the moment.}

With 264 precincts reporting,
.38 spl now has less than 1% lead
over 9 mm & .45 ACP in this race.

ABCBSNBC is unable to call this race so far.

We'll just have to see how this plays out.
A run-off election is possible ... :scrutiny:

Aw, now, you know you're going to love it when this club buys out the m&p340 club and merges the two. :p

So I was looking at a brand new 642 (no lock) yesterday with the Crimson Trace laser grips. I really like the feel of the grips ALOT, however I'm not sure if I really want/need a laser, feels a little mall ninja to me - what do you think?

Also, the guy said he would give it to me for $610 (with CT grips). Is this a good price or should I try to get it for less? He said he would put regular grips on it and sell it for $410.

As I stated in another thread, I definitely want some grips that are a little bigger than stock.

Opinions? What do you think I should go with? Why? Prices?

This would be my CCW.

Thanks!

Aw, how quaint. :D

They do make a fine couple, don't they?
_______________

In that poll, 9mm and .38 spl are in a dead heat,
with 45 ACP falling behind a couple of points.

I'm finding that of great interest for some reason:
that the .38 spl - an old, out of date, washed up rnd
- is holding its own as an SD rnd.

Who'da thunk it?
