WASHINGTON (AP) — Sixty-five House Democrats said Wednesday that they would oppose any attempt by the Obama administration to revive a ban on military-style weapons that President Bill Clinton signed into law in 1994 and President George W. Bush let expire.

The pro-gun Democrats, led by Rep. Mike Ross, D-Ark., wrote Attorney General Eric Holder that they would "actively oppose any effort to reinstate the 1994 ban, or to pass any similar law."

They urged the administration to avoid a "long and divisive fight over a gun control issue" at a time when Washington needs to concentrate on the economic crisis.

The House letter came a day after Montana's two Democratic senators, Max Baucus and Jon Tester, wrote a similar letter to Holder saying the Justice Department should enforce existing laws before considering new gun ownership restrictions. "We will strongly oppose any legislation that will infringe upon the rights of individual gun owners," they said.

This is fantastic news, and it really shows that our efforts on gun rights issues are not going unnoticed in Washington D.C.!

Keep up the good work, this is the kind of stand we need our representatives to be taking on our behalf!

Today in a letter to Attorney General Eric Holder, 65 Democrats in the U.S. House of Representatives, led by Congressman Mike Ross (D-AR), expressed their opposition to the reinstatement of the failed 1994 ban on semi-automatic firearms and ammunition magazines. These congressmen cited numerous studies that proved the 1994 ban was ineffective, and they strongly urged Attorney General Holder to stop his effort and instead focus on the enforcement of existing gun laws.

NRA would like to thank Congressman Ross for his leadership on this effort. We will continue to work with Members of Congress from both parties on this important issue.

And send thank you letters to those reps!

Excellent idea. Everyone with an interest in maintaining Second Amendment rights needs to continue to make their voce known by contacting their legislators. Those who are with us need to know that their support of gun rights will mean votes for them, and those who oppose gun rights need to know that they will pay a price at the polls.

I believe that I jumped for joy, a little too soon.

It occurred to me that these are all politicians first and pro-gun second, if at all.

Sure, this is a good thing, but rather transparent. The reps from my state could be rabidly anti-gun fascists for all we know. They would still sign this letter because job #1 for any, all, and every politician is to get reelected. We fool ourselves by thinking that these guys work for us, that they are focused on helping this country, and that they have our best interests at heart. That's BS. They are interested in retaining their elected seat. That's all.

Many Democrats from states like mine could never, not for one second, let an anti-gun position be made public because it would get them thrown out of office. The elected office they hold carries too many benefits to throw caution to the wind and show their true colors. No, they must, at all times, be thinking of the next election cycle and how to maintain the occupation that we gave them.

I do see this move as a positive, but no a victory per se. I'm sure not all of the Dems on this letter are political sleaze bags, but most of them are for sale. If the BHO administration actually made an effort to reinstate the 1994 ban, or to pass any similar law, all he would have to do is buy off enough of these Dems with pork projects for their states, and they'd fold like a pair of sweat pants and vote this thing through. That is how politics works. I sent off an email thanking my elected rep. I encourage all to do the same. But I also recommend that you mention to them that wavering even a bit on these issues in exchange for anything in return from their cronies is unacceptable.

I think this letter is a good thing. It helps us out greatly. But my cynicism tells me that these "leaders" aren't our advocates when the right pork is on the table.

Ya know, as a self-described liberal libertarian myself (it would take some explaining...) and I'm glad to see some Democrats going against the status quo. Too much party alignment on both sides (both conservative and liberal, republican and Democrat). I am glad to read this news!

I called my reps office to thank him,the lady answering the phone was really surprised. She was surprised he had signed the letter,IMHO.Please call your reps and thank them, you can bet the Brady bunch are making their opinion known.
