LGS has a lightly used S&W 66-2, 4 in. on consignment for 500 otd. Has fiber optic front and rear sights, bianchi paddle holster and nylon. Also has original box. Comes with the small round butt wooden grips (all 66's were square butt?) A good deal or just so so. I have a Dan Wesson 15 w/ three barrrel lengths and a blackhawk in .357, so its not needed, just wanted.:banghead:

fiber optic sights were not original and hurt the value significantly, imo, especially if the front sight was machined off so a dovetail could be milled on for the new sight.

Makes a $500 gun into a $350 shooter, imo.

I agree

I was saddened to see the fiber optics also. I might call the original owner to see if he has them, but I doubt he does or they would be in the box.

I'd go see the owner and slap him upside the head for putting fiber for a front sight on such a gun.

Nope, I would not get that gun. LGS can keep it.

Ouch!

I can't believe Ebay wants 100 bucks for rear and 50 for front sights. I have a rear sight assembly of an N frame, will that fit? And considering my local, there's not a lot of gunsmiths capable of milling anything, so I guessing the front sight was a direct screw on replacement? If I call the guy and or go see the gun again, temptation just may overcome rational thinking. Any more advice?

Unless you could get the original sights back on it, I would pass on that deal unless you can get the price knocked down to $300 or so, $350 tops?

BTW, I have a 66-2 snub I bought back in the 80's for like $150 - $175, something like that. They are great little wheel guns, mine has seen years of hard use, it stills locks up nice and tight, and shoots very accurately.

Since it is a consignment deal, make what you consider a reasonable offer, but ask the counter guy to call the seller and make the offer in your presence.

Be tactful, but persistent.

I am not a lawyer, but it is my understanding that the gun shop has a legal obligation to forward all offers, not just the ones that they deem advantageous.

Some take this responsibility more seriously than others in this regard...if you know what I mean.

If it is in the shape you say, it is not going to go dirt cheap--it is just too good of a revolver. If you buy it, perhaps you can sell the grips, the sights, the holsters (if you are not gong to use them). All of that may add up to $100-150, but will require a bit of time and effort.

I bought my 66 no-dash probably ten years ago. It is nothing special condition-wise, but it would probably be one of the last handguns I would sell.

Good news!

So I called the original owner and he says he has the original sights and lowered the price to 450! I think I'm going to go get it.

Pleasant surprise!

So I just picked it up and to my surprise its a rare 3 in.! I got it for 450 otd, the original sights i'm picking up tomorrow and the gun was unmodified for the fiber optics. Box, tools, original grips, two holsters, and paperwork all a bonus.:what: I'll post pics as soon as I can.

That's a great deal for what many consider to be a "grail gun"...a 3" magnum K frame. I'd have jumped at that gun too once the original sights came around and the gun wasn't permanently modified
Call it $75 or so to have the original sights reinstalled, and you came out pretty good, imo.

I could be wrong.
But I am not aware of any Model 66-2 coming with interchangable, or changable front sights.

The sight ramp and sight were forged in one peice as part of the barrel on every one I ever heard of.

Beware it is really a Factory 3", and not a 4" someone had cut off and a new ramp installed.

The label on the box should give you the barrel length it shipped with from the factory.
Check it out.

Front sight

I'm reading conflicting stories of some having pinned and some integral. If mine was milled, it was done well and the new fiber optic sight is pinned in place. I guess I'll find out tomorrow after looking at the old sights. I'll try to post pics tomorrow. The matching box lists it as 3 in from the factory. Not a deal breaker of it was milled. I'm really starting to like this new toy. Fits me better than my N frames.

S&W sells the original sights and fiber optic replacements on their site. The original owner might have bought the sights from S&W and did a direct replacement.

Original adjustable rear sights are under $11 and a front sight kit is $40.

I've seen a true 3" 66 with pinned front sight. Matter of fact, you can see one here:

http://www.grantcunningham.com/model_66.html

Be sure it's a true 3" 66, though. Many 2 1/2" 66s are mistakenly called a 3". Likewise, S&W made a run of 66s with 3.25" barrels, though I recall they were later than the 66-2.

As rcmodel points out, it could be a cut down 4", but in that case, the lettering on the barrel would be off-center.

If it is a true 3" 66, you got a heck of a deal, even had you paid the original price, IMO.

Maybe I'm not remembering correctly (I'm at work and the gun is at home)... but I do have a 66-2 (2.5") that I bought new in 1987. I think the sight is one piece, forged, and the only removable part is the red insert on the front ramp. No pins involved. Interesting thread.

I know, still waiting on pics...

So I picked up the original sights today and the front is indeed a pin-on sight. The aftermarket fiber optics is from "Cylinder & Slide Inc." The model is CS0358SET. I have the matching box with matching serial numbers that lists it as a true 3 in. I took it out this evening for a quick run and I love it. Accurate and pleasant to shoot even after I installed the original wood round butt grips. I'll see if my web-designing, computer geek of a wife can help with pics to end most speculation.:)

I've only ever saw a couple 3" 66s, and those were listed north of $1k. The original otd price would've been a screamin' deal. Neither the seller nor the store owner did their homework, it seems.

Trying Pics

Here they are!

You guys are sadly deceived if you think you can waltz in and pick up a gun like a Model 66 for $300-$375. Regardless of what sights were put on it after the fact, the only pistol you can get in that price range is a used Taurus!

People who buy those guns to shoot will find benefit in better sights. For those who want to tuck it away in a safe in the original condition, they won't pay what a shooter will. So don't wait for the price to drop or insult the owner by asking him to part with the gun for three hundred bucks. I can't imagine why one would want to part with such a gun unless he or she was otherwise being forced to cannibalism or paying for momma's chemo.

For the money, the deal looks good. Me, I'm holding out for a mint 66 with a pinned barrel, counterbored chambers, stamped sights and black rear sights. No one in their right mind would want to part with such a revolver unless the barrel was screwed in backward, but still, people who sell these classics will regret getting rid of them. They just don't know it yet.

Yet i keep seeing them out there.
I have picked up several nice s&w's for under $400 this year. I picked up a CPD commemorative 66-1 in 95% condition last year for $375.

I'll chime in

Got a 66-3 four-inch for $479 plus tax last year. I think you did great... Mine had no box, but did come with a nice Don Hume holster!
