I have a good friend that has a 686 6 inch Ser No. AAR 50XX Like new condition. This is a square Butt six shot with smith "checkered diamond" grips. It also has a Safari Land Leather engraved "29" belt holster. Would it be worth more than a a new model? I told him I would ask you guys. Any ideas?
Thanks in advance.

I had mine here for sale for $425, i didnt sell, so back in the safe, mine is a 4 inch, with no lock no mim, who knows , might be that no one has the cash , the 686 is a fine revolver, csa

IIRC some early S&W 686s had troubles concerning an oversized firing pin hole which led to pierced primers... but I don't remember if they were dash or no dash or what. Does anyone know about this?

Yes there was a recall on some early no dash 686, these guns that have been back to the factory will have a (m) stamped on the frame, mine has not been back, if there are no proublums i dont see the need to send it back, i think the gun would have had showed sighns of problums by now, csa

The recall had something to do with the firing pin bushing, somthing about primers (on heavy loads) could back out of the primer pocket slightly and lock up the cylinder.

It Does have the "M" stamped under the serial #. I would have thought a little more money but I appreciate the responses.

Wait until the spring to sell it if getting top dollar matters. Prices are a bit soft right now as people are spending $$ on christmas, not themselves, and gift-givers tend to not buy used firearms for gifts.

The information on the recall is mostly correct. A few were fit with oversized FP bushings allowing primer flow-back. That one was corrected (whether it needed it or not, they just do the mod if you ask). 6" is generally less desirable than a 4", and it will fetch $425 to $475 if it is clean after mid-january. That it has the original grips is a plus. I believe your holster is the wrong model as the "29" is for an N frame - it may be a little loose in that holster?

I agree with Oro, after tax season is the time to sell. People are happy with their checks and want to spend.

At $500 it would sell fast in my neck of the woods. The early no lock models are very desirable, if this comes with box and papers, plus the holster it would be a good buy. That's considering it's in excellent condition.
