I should not have hesitated a year ago when they were on the market at a $350 price mark. Now unless I pay $650 for a cz there are no reasonable priced 39's
to be had. Were they that unpopular that no one will chamber it anymore?

Savage makes one that i looked at before buying my CZ527, there are a few zastavas around too, but they are hard to locate. 7.62X39 makes a ton of sense for a light deer rifle, but it has a stigma of being inaccurate. The stigma is wrong, but everyone that builds a 223 now builds a 300blk, so 7.62x39 has competition in its own niche. Not that 300blk can compete with handloaded 7.62x39, but its kinda tough for the rifle manufacturers to build a different bolt and chamber, mag, and sometimes stock, just to get a lukewarm seller out there. For 300blk its just a different barrel, and the market likes 300blk. Just my opinion, and yeas i had to pay $700 for my CZ, so i went through this thought process...

The 300 Blackout is giving the x39 a run for its money right now. Similar ballistics with the added option of being loaded subsonic in suppressed ARs. Like the above member posted, companies already offering a 223 bolt model can just rebarrel and use the same action and bolt for a 300 Blackout model instead of having to completely retool for a x39 model. The costs likely are too great for projected profits.

Howa has stated that the next two chamberings planned for their mini action rifle are 6.5 Grendel and 7.62x39. I think the Grendels are supposed to start shipping pretty soon, and the x39's by the end of the year. The .223's I've held seemed pretty nice, if you want a bolt gun so chambered, it might be worth waiting for the mini.

The 527M can also be chambered for 6.5 Grendel by a simple barrel swap...what I've been told.
The CZ 527M in 7.62x39mm is worth the money, IMHO.

not a bolt action but you could do a mini 30 with an accu-strut, 5 round mag and a scope.

The CZ and Howas have the advantage* of being a true mini action, whereas the Savage is a short action. I have a CZ 527 youth in 7.62x39, most fun to shoot of anything I own. Three feet long and six pounds loaded and ready to hunt. I replaced the standard notch and bead sight with a peep sight and partridge post from NECG -- I really like that setup.

*The Savage may be better if you want to load hot. I don't handload, which is one reason I like common calibers.

I just bought one last month

All I can say is I love it. Will shoot anything I throw in it and accurate also, except it does not like Tula at all. Of course Tula is very dirty and it goes from poof to bang, so you do not have any consistency at all.

Now with WPA it is a tack driver. I order 1000 round of the WPA 125 grain SP for around $5.67 a box.

This will be my new timber and 200 yard and under rifle. It is light and easy to handle and just beautiful wood.

I just wish I could have found one a lot earlier.

Hesitation will kill you in this game.

Buy one NOW.

If you decide you don't like it, sell it for a profit later on. Guns appreciate in value almost always.

I have had three and always end up being underwhelmed. I get fired up by the cheap ammo side of the deal and then have not had good accuracy with the cheaper ammo. We can also shoot a long way out here where I live and the 7.62x39 trajectory just can't compete. I alway go back to the .223/5.56 which still has affordable ammo, better trajectory, and plenty of oomph for the things I shoot at. If I lived in the hardwoods or a swamp I might have to try for number four, but I most probably would just end up carrying a Marlin 336 or a Winchester 94. I am not trying to rain on your parade, just throwing out my experiences.

Like the others have said, the CZ is a beautiful rifle and worth the cost. I am once again tempted by the prospect of the Howa Mini action, but will most likely pick a different caliber.

If I really had to do it again right now, I would probably buy a Ruger American in 300 Blackout.

Being a reloader, I like to be able to use standard .308 caliber bullets and efficiency of the cartridge appeals to me.

Just my dos centavos,

Matt

I have a CZ 527 7.63x39 which is pretty nice, not a work of art, but it's functional and covers all the bases that need to be covered. It will not shoot cheap bloc ammo any more accurately than any other rifle from what I can tell.

With good ammo, meaning Hornady brand 123 grain SST steel case, it puts up decent groups at 100 yards, That same ammo in my Olympic Arms 7.62x39 AR15 upper is more consistently accurate than the CZ though.

The very best accuracy I've seen from 7.62x39 has been from an Oly Arms AR15 upper, it was a friend's rifle he'd worked over, it was amazingly, consistently accurate.

a lot of cool replies! maybe I just like the idea but alternatives are probably better.

Most of the x39 Mini Mauser rifles were pretty junky, with massive bolt bind, poor fitment and ugly finishes. I had one imported by Charles Daly, what a pile of crap that was.

I had a 799, and agree completely.

I think you should get what intrigues you and enjoy it! I have become the king of .357 rifles for some odd reason; talk about limited range!

I will say that every rifle I have owned has taught me something valuable and I don't feel that my journey with the x39 bolt action is yet complete. I say you pick one up and have fun.

I have 2 CZS and a Ruger M77 MK II in 7.62x39 all very nice rifle.
Had a Remington/Zastava extractor broke and at the time no replacement parts. Fortunately dealer took it back and gave me full creditt toward a CZ.

I had the hots for a Howa Mini. The game plan was to buy the .223 now on Buds for $368 and wait until Oct 16 and buy the X39 when it shipped.

However, I learned from Howa yesterday that the 10 round mags are plastic. They are not interchangable with AR mags, and a new one is $55.

I agree that CZ is a good choice but a little spendy. But for your money you'll receive a very well built rifle with genuine walnut and an ingenious set trigger device. My USAF buddy has one and slays Virginia whitetails shooting Winchester soft tip ammo. Last year he downed 3 does with 3 shots. The 7.62 X 39 is deadly within reasonable distances.

I think it's the ultimate open sights deer rifle for the eastern woodlands where I hunt. Out to 150 yards, which is as far as I would ever shoot anything with open sights, it maintains 1000 ft-lb of energy and enough velocity to expand a TSX bullet. It's not as effective as a scoped 30-06 for putting meat in the freezer, but it's more fun.

I may move to Colorado at some point in the future. I think the like little CZ would be useless out there where the shots are long and the wind is strong, but back east it's a fine rifle.
