Here's a cut and paste from a vendor. Would it work? Chamber pressure concerns? Should I worry about wearing out the rifling? Heck, could I feed from magazine?

Thanks, Folks.

How about using the 7.62x39 in the 308 or 30-06?
Or the 308 in the 30-06?

As gun writer Roy Huntington said: "Duh...this was so obvious and simple."

Now you can turn your 308 or 30-06 into a 7.62x39 and take advantage of inexpensive ammo!

Simply coat the the outside of the adapter with non permanent Locktiteâ„¢, place a fired 7.62x39 case inside the chamber and close the bolt. After 10-12 hours, eject the 7.62x39 case and you are ready to start shooting. Inexpensive Russian ammo costs 25-50% less than any regular 308 or 30-06. A broken shell extractor will remove the adapter and return the gun to it's original caliber. If you are careful, the adapter is reusable!

Also available in 308/30-06. Each kit includes one tube of Locktiteâ„¢.

Complete kit: only $25.00. Broken shell extractors
: $10.00

Be well and safe.

Forget accuracy.

You have @ 12mm of freebore before the bullet even hits the rifling.

And those chamber inserts have a nasty habit of extracting at exactly the wrong time. That's why the U.S. Navy gave up on their chamber insert conversion of the M1 Garand to 7.62mm NATO. (aka 7.62x51/.308 Winchester)

Mannlicher?

"stupid" would trying it AFTER being told the good reasons not to; "ignorant" would be not knowing; "learning" would be asking folks who are well-versed in the field of knowledge why it would, or would not, be a good idea.

But, thanks for your input. :)

Be well and safe.

The really big problem is that, unfortunately, the 7.62mm bore diameters are not the same 7.62 mm. Strange I know, but the 7.62x51 has a bullet diameter of .308. The 7.62x39 has a bullet diameter of .311. Not a huge difference but it could cause some interesting pressures and a good bit of additional bore wear. Personally I would not do it but it is not my rifle.

Barrel caliber is measured land to land. AK47s have very deep grooves and shoot .003 dia wider bullets. For all that an AK47 costs, I dont see the positive side to risking my life and the integrity of my expensive 308 caliber firearm.

Hey, Kismet. Nice to see you.
Chamber inserts have been around a long time. It probably wouldn't be actually dangerous- not like the 7.62x39mm is a barn burner- but, you could get something purpose-made, that will probably work better, for not much more.

I had actually just read the surplusrifle.com article earlier this week about doing this. I've never heard great things about inserts, especially ones the manufacturer even calls "semi-permanent". It'd be kinda fun if it worked good but I think I'll stick to what a gun is actually chambered for.

As Gewehr98 mentioned, the US Navy tried this same thing with M1 Garands chambered in .30-06, "insert reduced" to 7.62 NATO.

Worked OK until the insert came out with an extracted round, and then the next round was a 7.62 in a .30-06 chamber. Got well....interesting for the shooter.

I wouldn't try it.

CZ makes a reasonably priced bolt action in 7.62x39.

SKS are cheap and readily available.

There is no reason to try this stunt at home.

The rim diameters of the .308 and 7.62x39 are different by about 0.030" and the casehead diameters are almost as different as well. It would be a matter of grreat luck that that everything came out nice and centered in the chamber.

The article on surplus rifles made my skin crawl. The rifle was a 1916 spanish which is of dubious strength at best to handle 7.62 NATO- the rifle was made for a much lighter loaded .308 cartridge- and they wanted to shoot an oversized bulelt through it??

I should point out that MCA also makes a lot of other nifty little items other than the tested 7.62x39 insert. They also have adapters that will allow you to use the 7.62x39 in the following:

* 7.5 French
* 7.65 Argentine
* 8mm Mauser
* 7.7 Japanese
* 30-06

8mm mauser??? What is the point of that one? 8mm is cheap, though getting scarcer, but a guy wouldn't be able to hit a broad side of a barn shooting .30 bullets down an 8mm bore.

I can see using a 7.65 argentine, 7.62x54R or .303 for such a conversion as the bore and groove diameters wouild be at worst slightly oversized, but there still isn't any point to it.

With the smaller rim diameter I can also see problems with extraction.

Surplus ammo, brass cased and even boxer primed (reloadable) can be had quite cheaply from regular gun shows or mil-surp suppliers, I just did not have to the time to get it. I was concerned that the steel casing would not work in the insert, but in speaking with Ace Dube (owner of MCA) he stated that it should work, but MAYBE I may have extraction issues and that I should first put a bit of reloading lube on the case before inserting it into the chamber.

Whoa Buckaroo! :uhoh:
Say what?
Your going to take an already weak action and put the full pressure of the cartridge on the locking lugs instead of allowing it to bear on the chamber walls? Gah! :what: Did we forget this was an oversized bullet also? :scrutiny:

Run away from this one, don't walk :mad:
