I'm leaning toward SKS... Thanks for input.

There is a thread with pics of a guy wanting to sell his Norenco at
THR. Pm him and maybe a real deal can be made if that is the route you wish to go.

I had completely forgotten about ye ole' Mini-30... Guess I could keep my commie bullet launcher made in the USA?

The Mini-30 is an interesting animal, earliest models were .308 barrels, later were a far more sensible .311. I haven't had good luck with Minis over the years but many people have.
I mentioned the most accurate 7.62x39mm bullet launcher I own is this, CZ 527M,

but I hadn't chimed in with the fun 7.62x39mm bullet launcher, absolute blast to shoot, SA vz-58,

The one on the right is the SA vz-58 in 5.56mm, BTW.;)

I had an SKS, sold it to get my Saiga which subsequently got unconverted, sold that to fund my AR.

Through all that change, my CZ 527 is still with me. Very fun little rifle...light, handy, quick handling. I'd love to get a 4x scope for it someday.

The hunt continues for the CZ 527... The VZ58 is intriguing too, should my foray into 7.62x39 deepen. It used to be so much fun to bash it as the "commie caliber" and now listen to me...

I would just get a modern ak or the saiga since finding the sks for a good price is a little harder now. I have a sks and moded it to takes double stack mags. I just enjoy gun projects. I been thinking about trying out the bullpup stock for my sks if stuff like that interest you.

Personally this is what I am saving my pennies for:

CZ 527 carbine in 7.62x39.

One nice feature is that since surplus corrosive ammo will likely be shot out of it, cleanup is a snap (since its a bolt action).

I haven't tried one yet, but I'm just throwing the suggestion out there for something for you to think about.
eh, it's not like field stripping an AK is difficult or time consuming :p for that matter, an SKS is almost as quick once you get used to it.

I'm partial to my SKS, it's reasonably accurate, and easy to maintain. Here in KY you're not going to be shooting far enough to really need a scope. And in a worst case scenario it makes a much better club than some plastic rifle.

Desert Fox/'Wustenfuchs': My Norinco SKS acquired the fully-adjustable Tech Sight a few months ago.

It is now a very different rifle, and this really good sight makes it much easier to make hits on a small target at 30-50 yards etc (my max. range-by choice). Five of the nine shots are in a 1 & 1/2" circle at 50 yards, on the Shoot-N-See bullseye. Only Wolf/Monarch ammo is used.

It is also quite a change when the shots No Longer go high. 'Viel Gluck' with your decision.

DesertFox: I found you a CZ 762X39 at the BULLEYE GUN SHOP in Wichita Ks 316-686-7264. Or a least they had one a week or so back. I looked at the rifle and it seemed brand new but I don`t remember if it was new or used, and they had not priced it yet. Like I told you, the rifle we have is getting to be one of my favorites and I use it a lot for just walking around. I have a fold up chair blind that is super lite and so with the blind, small cooler, fox pro, and the little CZ rifle I can sit in one place for hours if I want to. This set up works for me because I don`t have that many places to hunt any more, and as I get older my walks get shorter. A 200 yrd shot is no problem with this rifle. And ours likes Wolf Brand HP`S, still can`t really belive that but it does. I hope you buy this rifle because I sure don`t need another one. Good Luck To You: ken

cpt-t: you sound like me! I'll have them a jingle tomorrow... Before you run out and buy it.;-)

I am getting a model 1 upper and building one so I have the accuracy of the AR platform. I just cannot get into the ak stuff. I have a sks that I never shoot.

I'd just go with the AK47. The SKS is a nice, cheaper option for 7.62x39 though. The Mini 30 is nice choice as well as long as you get one that will reliably pop harder surplus ammo primers.

I like SKS's. They are fun rifles to tinker with and have fun. Here is mine that I built from random parts I had laying around. I wanted to go for that "sniper" look and it is one heck of a shooter.

your imagination is your limit when it comes to putting one together the way you want it.
