Anyone have a 7.62x54R load available for Sierra 150gr. .311 ProHunter & H4350? Thanks in advance...Funnel

Havent used the H4350 but have used 55.0 gr. of IMR4350 with very nice results with the 150 sierra pro hunters in my 1936 vintage 91/30 .

Sierra 5th edition shows a OAL of 2.90 for their .308 150 gr. spitzer and Lyman has the .311 diameter 150 gr. (Hornady) at 2.87 in 7.62x54R.

Back in the 80s, I used the same Sierra .311 dia 150 gr. spitzer for .303 British. I just looked at the remaining bullets and they are part #2300, should be same bullet.

This is more of a question than a reply. I just started to load this round & haven't been able to find resonable priced boxer brass. I have been using once fired S&B but only have 20 rounds (cases) to play with. If anyone out there has a sorce please advise. The 7.62 x 54R brass is for the most part 99.99 % berdan. Not at all surprising considering the history behind this cartridge.:banghead::banghead:

I use PRVI Partisan brass. Most of mine is reused from just buying their ammo, both locally and online. Can be had reasonably priced, boxer primed, and shoots quite well in my M39's. It is the same as Wolf Gold, but usually costs less. I have also bought 100 count PRVI brass from Grafs, when they have it. Was 40 bucks a pop last time I bought.

Have also heard PRVI is a shade better than S&B.

Not Norma or Lapua quality though.

Ret.CWO, I bought some Lapua for about a buck a piece for a guy that wanted to get "better" brass after his cases were swelling. He never followed up so I have a box of 100 if you are interested. Say .50 cent on the dollar?

Seems like the biggest factor for loading the 7.62x54R is to slug the barrel to see if .308 or .311 diameter bullets are the right choice.

Here's a 7.62x54R load for IMR 4350 that shot very well out of my M39.

I use IMR 4350 for 7.5x55 Swiss reloads in my K31's with great results.

Please be careful as I don't know if the IMR4350 and H4350 are identical? They may not be? I've never used the H4350.

IMR4350 and H4350 are similar, but the burn rate is not the same. Data does not interchange.
MCM, your reload is .1 light from being the Lyman 49th accuracy load for the 180gr round. I've had very good results with it.

47.5 IMR4350, COL 2.975, Fed210 primer
10 rounds with irons only @ 100 yards. 9 of the 10 hit under 2 inches. The high hole blew it out to 2-5/16" which is still damn good in my book.

Hi Funnel,

2.990 OAL for those Russians I loaded . I know there are great variations in the bores of these guns and I would have to think the throats would have some variations as well so not sure my OAL will give the same jump to the lands as they would for your rifle . I figured out how to use my Stoney Point OAL tool by drilling a hole through the primer big enough for the sliding flex rod to move through on a fire formed unsized case to get the OAL reading where the bullet contacted the lands and then set the OAL back .025 . This was a great performing round shooting 1 1/2 inch with the factory iron sights and my eyes arent all that good. Am considering bending the bolt and scoping this one and shoot to the full potential of this old rifle . 10 SPOT

N4Z thats an impressive group for 100 yards with iron sites. There were a lot of M-44's in Iraq when I was there. It's a good thing those idiot's couldn't hit the broad side of a barn or we would have been in big time deep do do. It just proves there is nothing wrong with the round it's the shooter.

Thanks CWO. I shoot Finnish Mosins so I've got the Finn advantage working for me. Russian M44's can be accurate, but in my experience it's not the norm. Not without a little accurizing massage work anyway.

Love the x54r myself. Load it and use it in MBAR matches. 30-06 seems to be the popular choice for those events.

I'll have to check out my local Wally's World. $12.00 to $15.00 a box is not a bad price. I'll have to slug the barrels with some soft lead and see if my 150 Gr. .308 will work. If not I'll have to look for some FMJ .311 I have some .311 but thier only 124 Gr.

you can come across wolf gold line ammo, around $15 a box.... but you get decent brass and boxer primed....figure 5 to 10 boxes should last you a while.

Dunhams Discount Sporting goods has what looks like surplus 7.62x54 ball (?) ammo in 20rnd pkgs for $9.95 each. And I believe Winchester fmj in 20rnd pkgs for I believe around $20. Not sure what grain. They also have 91/30's on sale right now for $79.95 in fair to good shape. Laminated stock versions for $149.95. Unsure of bore condition on any of them. But based on exterior condition, the laminated versions look to be in better shape.

I was wondering what the equivalent would be for the 7.62x54 round. 7.62x51 is roughly the same or simular to a .308 round. Would the 7.62x54 be simular or the same as a .270 ? Reply to my e-mail please: [email protected]
