I was looking at ammo for my kids 7mm-08. I came across hornady 7mm-08 light magnum cartridge. can they be shot in a 7mm-08 and if so is there any advantage over the other ones that are non magnum.

The lite Mags are fine in any NON auto rifle. The added recoil might be more then you want to put the kids through though, it isn`t much but it is there. I`d stay with standard ammo for the younger ones and forget the lite mag stuff. I`ve shot afew deer with with the 708 and it needs nothing more then a 139-140 gr bullet at normal velocity to drop them to 300 + yds with ease.

BTW I`ve heard good things about the Nosler 120 gr BT in this cartridge. I don`t have experiance with them, but if you reload they might be a good choice. I think Federal loads them in factory but can`t swear to it. The guys at www.24hourcampfire.com swear by them.

Go with what you know. If Remington, Federal, Winchester and Hornady standard ammo didn't kill deer, they wouldn't sell like they do. The Light Magnums are nice but not necessary and in my opinion have become too expensive.

I've been shooting the 7MM-08 since around 1986. It is an outstanding deer rifle and I have taken two Pennsylvania black bear with this round as well. The Remmington 140 Grain pointed soft point will do an excellant job if you are after accuracy and excellant knock down results on deer. Stay away from shoulder shots because the front end of a deer will wind up with meat that is blasted purple, so to speak. Stick with one brand of ammo when you have your rifle sighted in. I own a Ruger and a Savage in 7MM-08. I have shot deer with the 30-06, 308, 270 and have hade deer not stay down at the first shot and while using the 7MM-08 I have not had one deer EVER get back up after the first shot. The 7MM-08 is an outstanding deer cartridge.

Yes it is and it is good for just about any game that can be found in North America. I use it for Elk and Mulies.
