Been loading for 20 + years.Mostly use Nosler balistic tips never a cannelure.Just bought some Hornady sst 139 gr for my 7mm-08.I see they have a cannelure for crimping,I shoot exclusively in a bolt gun.Why did Hornady put a cannelure, and do the recommend crimping this bullet .Tx Don

If you are using a bolt action then crimping is not necessary. You can, and some people do. Try it without a crimp and with if you want to experiment with your accuracy. Your choice.

Hornady probably can't explain why they put a cannelure on their bullets any more that Speer can explain why they don't put a cannelure on their bullets.

Let your rifle tell you what seating depth is best (most accurate).

Whatever worked for the last 20 years- keep doing it.
I've been all over the crimp issue for myself; still can't get a positive bit of info. It did cause a max loaded 270 round to pancake a few primers, but Ruger #1's are beefy.
I don't crimp anymore - I do however use a lee "factory crimp" die on 300 and larger magnum rounds to prevent setback.

If a good crimp becomes necessary, a Lee Factory Crimp Die will make a cannelure anywhere on the bullet that you choose. Find the most accurate seating depth (every gun is a law unto itself) and use the FCD. I guarantee it will be seated as firmly as in a cannelure.

Hornady includes a cannelure on all of their hunting bullets except the interbond and omits them on all of their varmint and match bullets. It mentions this in the Hornady reloading manual and indicates it might mostly be for easy identification.
