If you look at that chart I linked, does your reticle look more like the first one (evenly spaced dots and/or hashes) or like the 3rd one (unevenly spaced marks or circles below the primary cross-hair)?

Oh, OK. The you wouldn't normally refer to that as a "BDC" reticle. The thing that's confusing me is that mil dot reticles are not set for a particular cartridge or load. They have the same angle (one mil between dots) and it's up to the shooter to figure out what that means for their cartridge/load.

If it really is a mil dot, that makes your life much easier. Since the hashes are the same distance apart and measured in mills, you can directly figure out their associated drop distances using a ballistics calculator without any additional complication.

I do not know a lot about scopes, I have used the same scope for years on my 243. it was a weaver 4x32. I used open sights for years, now with age and diabetes my eyes are getting worse. I have the one on my 17 hmr that it came with and the one on my 7mm-08 that it came with. I know the basics, how to sight in and with my 243 about how much to hold over at certian ranges. other than that I know nothing. I do know that they range from cheap to expensive. I have on the 17 and the 7mm a bsa.

they seem to work well, would it be worth it to find some thing better, or if it works don't fix it.

I own multiple rifles in both calibers, and not being concerned with long range performance, there isn't enough difference between the two to make a big deal over. You work up your loads properly and you will be happy with either. I've shot numerous heads of game with either caliber and the only real problem for me is which one to pick up as I leave the house.
