I won a 7mm-08 rifle last week and have been busy learning about it. I was wondering what different factory ammo is available. I have found Remington, Hornady, Winchester in 119/120 grain and 139/140 grain and even a 150 grain. I was wondering if there might be a factory 100 grain to use for groundhogs and small targets. Since I am new to rifle shooting could someone tell me the difference between the different types of bullets (ballistic tip, FMJ, etc)? Also, does someone have a link to pictures of different calibers and types of bullets to compare? Thanks.

The 7mm-08 is a very versatile caliber that suffers from a lack of variety in factory loaded ammo. While you can load your own in weights ranging from 100 grains to 195 grains, you won’t find that much variety in factory ammo. Your factory varmint round is going to be the Remington 120 grain hollow point if you can find it. Other than that, factory loadings are in the 139-150 grain range, and you won't find that much variety in factory ammo on dealers' shelves, either.

The 7mm.-08 is an absolutely superb performer in its weight range, which is typically 100-140 grains: but the factory loads tend to be concentrated in the upper 50% of that range. If you handload, the Sierra 100gr. hollow-point has produced some spectacular results in my experience, and I'm sure other bullet manufacturers have equally good performers. However, if you want factory loads in this weight, you might have to go to a custom loader who can tailor your ammo to your specifications.

yup.

let me also add that the 7-08 has got to be one of the most underrated cartridges around. i hope you enjoy yours, i'm sure jealous!
