7mm Mag

On the box of my .22lr shells, it says they can go a mile or more. I'd say a 7mm mag could go a lot further. Now hitting something, that's a different matter. Your question is pretty general, are you asking how far you can accurately shoot one?

in the right hands, im fairly certain it would be a sufficient 1000yards+ gun. I know one guy that killed a mule deer with one at 768 yards...again, depends on shooter, conditions, gun, optics, etc. the cartridge is only one piece of the equation. Shot up at a 45 degree angle I dont think it would have a hard time going 5 miles.

I'd say that it would be similar to the .300 mag which many people cliaim to be 1200 yards or so. Of course the shooter would have to do their part and it would have to be with a very good rifle to hit a reasonable sized target. It seems to me that in many cartrages, the max range is around where the round goes subsonic (in the ballpark of 1200 fps).

As far as a practical hunting range, it depends on what you're shooting at and how good the shooter is. In my case with a .300, the absolute furthest I'd shoot while hunting is 400 yards, under less than Ideal conditions, I'd limit myself more. I know from practice, the gun shoots accurately at longer distances, but things like range and wind estimation make the first few shots more trial and error, not good for hunting.

the 7 rem mag is limited only by the shooter and accuracy of the system. the cartridge itself is capable of anything the shooter is.

I'm sorry, let me be more clear. What is the maximum effective range of a 7mm mag, with the shooter and rifle doing their part. Target or deer hunting.

400 yards is, I believe, the very limit for the extremely skilled marksman to make a humane kill, in perfect conditions.

300 yards is a more realistic personal limit.

Too many things can go wrong...you owe it to the deer to make a clean kill.

jimmy- it is still a very long ways. i've target shot one of my 7 mags at 1000 yards, and it does just fine at that range. again, the killing range of the 7 rem mag is usually limited by the shooter. it is an effective, high bc cartridge that delivers on game or paper at whatever range.

oh lord not even close

the 7mm rem mag is head and shoulders above the 30'06 and .308.

marine snipers start training at 800 yard. and ww1 marines started combat at 1000+ yards

the 7mm mag will do anything you ask. consider max range to be anything down range. shoot into berms or 100+ mile deserts

Long range hunting with my 7mm is something I plan on trying in the future but I have to do a major optics upgrade, ALOT of long range target work (1000+ yards) and buy some stock in Berger vld's. From what I have seen of extended range hunting, shooting benches and gun rests are the norm.

The maximum range of a 308 is 5452 yards (3.1 miles). The maximum effective range is 1000 yards. The 7mm Rem Mag has considerably better ballistics, the British record being a 5 shot 2.6" group at 1000 yards. The record was set using a 7mm WSM. I do target shoot at 500 yards with my 700BDL SS in 7 Rem Mag using a bench rest. Using a VXII 3.5X10, 10" groups are as good as I can do. I deer hunt on a power line ROW which is in excess of 1000 yards long and I took the time to put up ranging stakes every 100 yards up to 500. The 150 gr. AccuTip zeroed at 200 has a drop of 6" at 300 yards, 17" at 400 yds and 34" at 500. Judgeing the holdover past 400 yards in the field is problematic. I killed a hog right at the 400 yard mark but missed a coyote at about 550 yards the same day. So 300 yards is a very comfortable hunting shot for me.

I think you missed my point.

I mean for an ETHICAL kill, people will be much better off keeping it closer. Just because the rifle will kill at 800 or 1000 yards doesn't mean you should take the shot.

A tiny puff of wind at 1000 yards may mean the difference between a shot in the boiler room and a shot in the gut. If you've never seen a gut shot deer dragging itself through the woods...well, it's not pretty and it's not ethical.

I read somewhere that for a deer you should try to have 800fps or more and for elk 1000fps or more. Considering that with a 7mm bullet it looks like this. Considering 3200fps muzzle velocity is going to be about max velocity if you load hot and the Berger VLD with their super high ballistic coefficient of .643.

So effective range considering 800fps is about 1350yards. Will you ever see anything that far besides a big old target? I doubt it, but there is your answer.

then that would hardly be by an "extremely skilled marksman " guys who regularyl practice a 1000 yards and more can make the shot. they know when to shoot, they know the winds they are artist. would i ever shoot at 1000 yards? no. cause i sucks and shake like a .25C washing machine. and an "extremely skilled marksman " make that shot at 1000 yards and humanly take down he animal. easily. should joe schmoe do it? no but if you know what your doing. its no problem

I was trying to give what Surjimmy was asking for. I agree that no one should shoot at a living target that far out unless they practice frequently. Winds have to be measured and the ranges need to be either marked off or measured precisely by a rangefinder. Too many variables to risk a wounded animal for my taste as well. The 7mm Rem Mag does have the long leg capability, much longer than I am capable of. But if you are looking for a long range cartridge, this one will hold up with the best of them, except for maybe the .50cal. I've never even found a range I could use over 300 yards, and I can't even find a range farther than 200 yards around here. 200 yards is a long way, if you look at it on a range. Just because a rifle can shoot farther doesn't mean anyone should fire away at maximum capable ranges. I'm not so sure he is looking to do that, or if he is just curious as to what a 7mm Rem Mag is capable of.

I do not plan on shooting anything at 1000yds. Was just curious as to what it can do. Just sold my 300 winn mag and ordered a Tikka 7mm. Had one in a Winchester 70, got the bug and sold it after I went hog hunting. Thanks for all the posts, please don't let them stop they have been alot of help. What do you guys think of the Tikka?

Tikkas are great rifles.
Accuracy is as good as it gets in your everyday sporter weight rifle.
I have a T3 Lite in 308 Win and it's nice and handy and has never had a problem.
It shoots Federal Premium Nosler Ballistic Tips sub MOA. The gun is nice and handy at just over 7 lbs with scope.

My T3 in 308 kicks like a Rem 700 or Win 70 in 30-06. I imagine a T3 in 7mm would be a relative shoulder thumper...
