Ok here's my setup and what I plan on doing to help reduce some of the recoil in my 7mm Rem Mag.

What would you do?

While I love shooting my 7mm Rem Mag, as everyone knows, it kicks like a mule.

I have the synthetic stock Remington 700. I took the recoil pad off and there is absolutely nothing inside the stock. Here what I am thinking about doing. I am thinking about lining the inside with fiberglass to form a pocket inside. Making two mechanical recoil reducers to transfer the energy to some springs and washers to add some weight. After the two mechanical devices I plan on spraying in some of the expandable foam to keep everything still and solid.

Does this sound like something that might work?

How would you approach it?

If there is a spring or other compressible system between the action and your shoulder, you will likely bean yourself in the head with the scope during recoil. Bad idea. This often harms accuracy.

I would recommend to install one of the effective muzzle brakes.

Hes talking about weights and springs inside the stock, it might feal kinda odd but it might well smootj out some of the shock. Easiest thing to do is add gun weight. Ive glassed in my forend and fully bedded the action, this both stiffened the stock as well as added about 1lb of weight. A break would also be a good option.

The easy way is to shoot some reduced power reloads with lighter bullets.

They make some shooting pads (and jackets) to go on your shoulder but that does not reduce the actual recoil of the gun. Helps pad your shoulder though.

I just did this to a friend's shotgun last winter. I used a mercury recoil reducer from brownells and used expanding foam from a local home improvement store. I also inserted a plastic grocery bag first so the foam didn't stick to the inside of the stock. I found that the foam only cured down about 2" below the surface because there wasn't enough air at the bottom. It worked okay but was a messy endeavor. I would suggest starting with a piece of high density, solid foam and cutting out a core for the reducer to sit into. Then shape the outside so it fits tightly into the stock. Make sure to add a foam endcap for the insert so the reducer doesn't beat against the recoil pad.

The other thing you can do to reduce felt recoil is to install a limbsaver recoil pad. They are worth every penny!

Just have one or two mercury tubes installed. You could also easily install them yourself too. I've shot 338 win mags and a host of other mule kicking cartridges that had them installed, and it makes a world of difference. The tubes run about $80 each, and for a 7 mag. one should do the trick. On average if installed correctly, they will reduce recoil by about 30% per tube.

Rowland,

Sell the rifle and get a upscale design. Select one with a thick soft recoil pad like the Decelerators.

Look at the m70, Ruger 77, Kimber and CZ.

Pick the 270. It shoots just as flat and kicks less.

The best thing you can do is get it off the bench and build you a standing rest.
My 375h&h from a standing rest has less recoil than most of my 30-06's do from a bench

In the 1950s my father made a math derivation of the optimization of recoil via hydraulics [A WWI French invention, but they did not figure out it should be parabolic taper]. He sold that to Rock Island Arsenal. Their engineers were so dumb that he started out with F= MA, because they could relate, but those terms drop out later.

I am at least that dumb, but often the simple understanding is the best.

Last year I hunted with a feather weight 7mmRM I built.

I think that recoil is perceived by nerve endings in the shoulder.
There is a threshold somewhere around 50 psi that triggers pain.
The way to avoid that to spread the recoil impulse over time and area.
I like the large un ground "grind to fit" Limbsaver.

This not only tames the 7mmRM, but the 338WM with 250 gr full house loads.

I have at least 9 rifles with the recoil pad not ground down, to retain more area.

This may seem visually objectionable, but not as ugly as a black and blue shoulder.
