The Ackley cartridges served a purpose back when they were first designed. We didn't have the plethora of cartridges available, with every possible niche filled....Like we do today. There were wide gaps in power/velocity back then.

I can chamber my own so I have fooled with several of the AI's over the past 30 yrs. I agree that many of them TODAY,are not worth the trouble. The .30-06 AI immediately comes to mind. But there are a few of them, that DO give the parent round enough extra velocity to make it worth it.
And...the sharp shoulder generally makes TRIMMING a thing of the past. Why a lot of high round count Varminters like the .223 AI's. Sure, a bit more capacity, but NO trimming.

I still have a pre 64 M70 in .257 Roberts AI, a Rem 700 in .280 AI and a couple of .223 AI's. think the 280 AI is one of the better ones. The 7mm Mauser and 6.5 x 55, given the AI treatment, are also worth a look.
