I currently have an Remington 870 express that I use primarily for hunting and shooting the occasional skeet; basically a mult-purpose gun.

Considering converting it over for a HD/trail gun (nothing too fancy) (when needed)

Considering:

1. Remington 18" BS cylinder #24620 Barrel
2. Either HoqueOverMolded Tamer or Pachmayr Vindicator Pistol Grip and Forend
3. 7 capacity (6+1) mag extender either Tacstar +2 extension or equivalent

However looks like it is going to run int the $200 range.

Wondering if if would be more economical to pick something already set up for HD such as a Mossberg 500 ? Any suggestions ?

IMHO ... screw the pistol grip ... it's "tacticool", but not very useful.

The 24" Mossburg slug barrel for the 870 will do the trick just fine ($90 from Havlin Sales http://www.havlinsales.com/, left side of page, close out barrels)

Mag extender ... maybe ... but it does negatively effect the balance of the gun.

Stick $100 in your pocket.

Thanks for the tips. Seems like most agree the pistol grip is pretty useless.

Looks like I can pick up a barrel and be good to go.

I agree with ditching the pistol grip. More of a pain than useful. If you look around for a good deal on a used Mossberg 500 right after hunting season, you can generally score one for about $200. That gives you two shotguns--not just one for the same money.

Just buy the 18" barrel and you're good to go. No need for pistol grips and the mag extension is just a personal preference thing. 4 rounds should get the job done. There's also the benefit of using the same shotgun with the same stock and foregrip since you can get lots of practice in while hunting and shooting clays, so that when the SHTF, you're familiar with the shotgun and can use it with confidence.

So ya, just buy the barrel if you don't want a new gun.

I have a 870 express I use to shoot trap now and then, bought a Mossburg 18 1/2" barrel cyl bore for HD. Takes about a minute to change over either way. Jim.

Pistol grip shotguns serve a purpose for military and law enforcement applications or as a backup gun that you may put in storage for emergency use. Otherwise go with a good stock. I have a Mossberg barrel made for Remington on my 870 and it works great.
