940 airweight conversions

I had a 940 and then got a 642 and before I sold the 940, I tried the 940 cylinder in the 642 and it worked very well. I then called S&W and ordered a 940 cylinder and I have it fitted so that I can put it in the gun but I need to have the star fitted for rotation and lock up to the gun.

I am going to keep the 38 spec cylinder and use it for practice and only practice with 9mm reloads that are very low pressure and I will only try my carry ammo to verify POI/POA.

Cool, was it worth it for you to do? Did you have to have gunsmith modifications or do the parts just swap?

I have a 940 and a 38-2, if I breed them it would be a sweet pocket piece..

What do you mean by having the star fitted for rotation and clyinder lock up?

It would seem worth while if it's just a matter of swapping clyinders, I would probally also have my gunsmith spin off and swap the barels to make them both complete.
 
Don't do it. It's not prudent. The standard Airweight series is not up to the pressures of 9mm. That's to say nothing of the erosion which may occur with the faster burning powders of the semi-auto rounds.

Now, if you have a Ti-Scan in .357, maybe you can get away with it. However, the shorter 9mm cylinder would leave a larger flash-gap. I don't know if the velocity reduction would be significant, or not.

The 940 cylinder has a tighter gap than the original 642 cylinder does.
The thing is you have to make sure you order the correct cylinder for your frame size, Standard J or Magnum J.

642 cost $295
940 cylinder $145
Gunsmith will cost $50 to fit cylinder

about $500 for a 9mm lightweight.
I sold My 940 for about $400

Hmm, another Brian who has an Airweight 9mm--what a co-inky-dink. My local 'smith ordered me a 940 cylinder from S&W and I fitted it up myself, very slowly and carefully btw, to a brushed nickle model 37. Hence I call mine a "Model 937".

Mr. Williams my game plan is the same as yours when it comes to practicing with the thing: I either use the .38 cylinder, or some mild 9mm reloads. Fwiw I have sorta "proof tested" it with two moon clips worth of Hydra Shocks. Hits right where the sights look.

All in all a good deal for me.
