9422 vs 39a

I worked odd jobs in the 90’s to save up for my first gun and wanted a lever action. Torn between Browning, Marlin, and Winchester, I chose the Marlin (I think based on the microgrove marketing and Annie Oakley history). I owned the Marlin for about a week and something sheared off in the action causing it to bind solid. Returned it and used the money for a 9422.

I still have that gun and my kids shoot it. Beautifully balanced and the blueing is worn off the bottom of the receiver from numerous crow, squirrel, and rabbit fiascos when I was a kid.

Nice!!!! Is that a Weaver mount? And a Weaver K(?)?
Nope, 3-Crows, the scope is a Leupold 7/8" dia. Alaskan in 2.5x. They built them in the '80's as a modern copy of the long forgotten Lyman Alaskan of the 40's & 50's. The mount on my Marlin is a Weaver, as are the rings. Original "Alaskan" 7/8" rings made by Leupold are mucho expensive and rare as honest politicians. The rings of course are steel but the rail is aluminum.

I like the setup, as much as one can like a scope on a lever gun, and the glass suits my well-aged eyes. All together, weighed on my wife's kitchen scale, the entire ensemble comes in at 6 lbs. 4 oz.,

Here's the same Century Limited with a Lyman receiver peep mounted....I had to get a taller front to get the elevation right but it's a nice set up and saves 3/4 lbs on the weight and is a delight to carry afield. My eyes are far enough gone that I've resorted to scoping my levers...sad to say.

Best Regards, Rod

My 9422 is a magnum version. Great rifle. Got a squirrel on a wood pile at 130 yards (3rd shot…but you know…)
All my other levers are Marlins. Great rifles. Love my 1895 45/70. I say that only to show I’m not prejudiced against Marlin.
Unfortunately, I had a gaggle of boys come and shoot some of my 22s, the 39a was the least popular. It was too heavy. Almost sold it. Still might, but it is a nice gun. One of the dads loved it.

There ya go. Might be too heavy for boys, but acceptably weighted for some full size folks.

An awesome collection of rimfire lever guns.

In your experience with them, what would you say are the pros and cons for each one?

To me there are no cons. All well made and perform up my standards. I bought the 9422 just after they came out. later years I put laminate wood on it. The Marlin 1897T was purchased (16 in octagon barre) cuz I never much cared for the long 39a. Ths browning BL-22 has a 22 in octagon barrel( i like octagon barrels!) and is a nice looking rifle that performs well in the squirrel woods.

I had both the 9422 and 39a. I now have the Marlin, only. In my limited experience with these two the Marlin was much more accurate. I did like the feel of the 9422 and find the Marlin heavy for what it is.

Found an exc 9422 XTR (non checkered) without box locally for 900.
Tempting.

Update: Hard pass, its had a swivel stud added to the buttstock
