Springfield XD40 vs. Smith and Wesson M&P .40

I'm planning to buy either the XD or the M&P in .40 cal. Which gun do you prefer in this specific caliber? This will be a range-only gun...basically want something with a nice trigger thats accurate.

I heard the XD in the .40 cal was a little bit "snappy" so I'm leaning towards the M&P, but still deciding.

M&P, no question. Lower boreline, better trigger - easy as heck to make even better, better ergonomics (to me, anyway), grip straps makes for better fit IMHO, and almost no muzzle flip. If it matters, the M&P is made 100% in America, which I also like....and Smith's customer service is second to none.

I owned an XD40 and liked it alot, but I like the M&P much better, and right now it's cheaper. Bought my M&P for $399.

The only thing I like better about the XD is the price of the mags, but that may change down the road. For now, the M&P mags are more $$.

You can't go wrong with eiiher but I would choose the M&P.

I only got rid of my XD40 to get an XD45ACP. I had no problems with it when I had it.

I personally would not want an M&P because the magazine disconnect bothers me, I just don't like that feature.

Already having the XD series, I'd take the XD. I see no need to learn a new platform when I'm already happy with the one I have.

I'd take whichever one felt better. I think it's a wash otherwise.

Swingset-Muzzle flip and trigger will probably be the main deciding factors for me. Thanks for elaborating on the first, but which has a smoother trigger? Also, where did u find the gun at that price? I'm getting quoted around the $475 range locally, so I'm considering buying online.

Euclidean- None of the gunshops I've called have both these guns in stock but are able to order them. A local range has the XD available for range use but doesn't have a M&P...whats the recoil like on the 45ACP compared to the 40 cal? I know .40's are known for being a bit snappy and such, and I'd like to avoid this as much as possible.

BTW, the mag disconnect is optional, just as the intregal lock is. You don't have to buy a gun with either of those features. That said, removing the mag-disconnect is a 10 minute job...and alters nothing about the gun's function. The M&P's trigger is slightly gritty when new, but crisp and it breaks cleanly. Better than the somewhat spongy XD's, IMHO...tho neither is a bad trigger. The nice thing about the M&P is that the trigger really smooths out after some use, and reworking it is SUPER easy, it's one of the easiest triggers to improve I've ever seen on an auto-loader. Just bought the M&P 40 cal for $522 with the night sites. It was the only one they had that was CA legal (10 mags). What exactly is a "lock"?

Yes, there's a .45 version coming. Talked to the rep the other night who's seen the prototypes. He said their ahead of schedule, should start seeing them in the coming months.

AFAIK, the only difference between the .40 and the 9 is the barrel and bolt face, so yes you could either switch slides/barrels or if someone decides to make conversion barrels like EFK or Barsto does for other guns it's doable.

There's also a 357Sig, FWIW.
