Stick with something that has the same grip angle and manual of arms so that you're training transfers completely.

It's all subjective, but I'm a fan of the Ruger SR9c. The trigger is awesome and I like the way it sits in my hand. Thinner than the G26, which I looked at also.

If you have to go with the options listed, I would try the Shield (but I have yet to fire one), but after years of research and trying virtually all available options, I went with the PPS by Walther, and it has been fabulous. I would also try the new Bersa 9mm as well....if I were to do this all over again today

All depends on how you prefer to carry

While I dont like to carry IWB, if you do the choices are infinite. As for me, I prefer to pocket carry so my favorites are Beretta Nano, PM9, or P380. I use a DeSantis Nemisis pocket holster for each. I have not experienced a single failure with these guns after firing the required number of break-in rounds. If I carry Using a belt holster I usually go with my PPS. I also own a G26, XD9sc, PX4sc, but find them a bit thick for concealed carry.

Robbins290 nailed it. Find a new or used S&W 3913/14 with two or three mags and you will never look back.

OP has an XD9. The XD9c is 13+1 or can use the same mags. The XD9c is big "subcompact" IMO. Owned one. Not my first choice, or even close. The Glock 26 is smaller. For real small in 9mm I suggest the Kahr PM9.

got an sr9c for the wife a while back and we both love it! i think i may have to get one for myself. i usually carry a glock 22 (have carried the 27 and still do on occasion) but the ruger is just so much more comfotable in the hand and it shoots very well!

I carried a Beretta 92 for about 4 years. I have also carried a RIA/Armscor MAPP1 MS (similar to the EA Witness P). Currently I carry either a Taurus PT 111 Pro or a RIA 1911 compact in 45 ACP. I've also carried a PT911 and a PT92 depending on my dress, mode or just to swap out guns for a day. My only rule is they fire at least 1000 rounds of various ammo without problem before I completely trust any gun regardless of maker.

G26, it's reliability is tops. Can take larger capacity magazines. Carries fantastic in a Comp Tac Mtac IWB.

I think you'll find that the Ruger SR9c isn't THAT much smaller than the XD Service model. And since you already have an XD, I voted Glock 26.

As far as other potential options, I have experience with the Taurus PT-111 (Millennium Pro) and it has been positive. I find them comfortable, slightly more concealable than the XD or the Glock, with still maintaining 12+1 capacity. Also, you're looking at saving $150. Intuition tells me this makes it a "lesser" gun, except that my experience with the PT-111 has been very positive while my experience with the G26 has been more unfortunate.

Also, if you don't mind hammer-fired, the Beretta PX4 Storm, Sub-Compact, is a SWEET pistol! I'd say it's between the Taurus and the Glock/XD in size.

I am a huuuuge fan of the PPS, but I am an HK guy so the mag release isn't an issue for me.

If you prefer a push-button mag release then get a Glock 26.

Kahr PM9 or K9 would be my top pick
Ruger SR9c is also great
MP shield is another viable option

Glock 19. I like having just a bit more sight radius, grip to hang on to & a few more rounds never hurts. I don't find it any harder to conceal either. The 26 is good; I just prefer the 19 over it.
