Colt was way ahead of their time ,My 1973 Colt .38 Detective Special is as good a EDC firearm as any of my semi-automatics [Beretta /Ruger] are to this day,with the onset of new defensive ammo's I have no hesitation about a .38 round and my snubby doing the job.

Does anyone have any ballistic info on rounds fired from the very short barreled snubies?

Mostly the velocity is under 800 FPS from a two inch barrel S&W J Frame, even with +P loads.
For instance.

Federal 158gr LHP+P==747 FPS

Speer 125gr +P GDHP==796 FPS

MagTech 125gr +P JHP==825 FPS

Winchester 125r JHP +P==802 FPS


Some people think the 2 inch barrel guns aren't much good over a few yards distance but the guns are accurate to the point that the shooter is the accuracy weak link, not the gun.

The best I can do is keep most all shots on this 24 inch steel plate, and most in the 18 inch silhouette, standing at 52 yards.

A good shot could keep most all shots COM in the silhouette using the 2 inch 38 revolver.

Would you believe three years ago I found this like new Colt Cobra at the gun show for $350.
I told the seller his price was too low. He said the Colt belonged to his son and that's what the boy said he wanted the dad to get. I couldn't get the money out fast enough.

I carried a Chief's Special S&W Mod 36 for years off duty. I gave it to my dad and he still has it. I eventually replaced it with a Charter Arms Off Duty which I have been carrying until I bought the LC9. The Off Duty has a pocket hammer on it and a Hip Grip for carrying in the waistband. We used to put rubber bands around the grip to make them easier to control, I now use vet wrap elastic tape to hold onto them better.

Standing, 52 yards, two hands, the gun would easily keep all shots COM if I could do it.

I would be happy to see the target at 52 yards LOL

M2 That and might be the buy of the century@$350,WOW,I have been offer a $1,000 for mine,I was at the range one morning and a guy that shoots there all the time noticed me Firing my 38 Colt and ask if he could look at it. I said sure I cleared it and opened the cylinder as He handed back to me I loaded it and handed it back and said let me step back and take some shots with it, he shot 6 rounds turned around smiling and said,I'll give you a $1,000 for it today,I said Thanks but I cannot sell it,He said ,I wouldn't either ..

It's not bad. Just hold a good sight picture and squeeze the trigger.

This is my friend's 16 year old daughter the first time I had her shooting at 52yards. Her target is the white foot square steel target, left of the black one. She hit it most of the time.

You can tell I had faith in her shooting. That's my tractor down there on the right.

What tractor, I can't see one Kids are great, great young eyes too LOL.

I ended up buying a Sig P290 and can't imagine shooting it at anything more than than 10 yards away, well I don't imagine I would hit anything smaller than a barn door at over 30 feet. I'm practicing to join a NRA Bullseye league and haven't been practicing at 25 yards for 2 months now that the weather has made outdoor use limited. I'm stuck at 50 feet indoors, but shooting a DW Valor is a tad easier than a pocket pistol I imagine.
