9mm primers get pulled back by decap pin

I have a terribly annoying problem - about 5% of the primers get pulled partly back into the pocket during resizing/decapping, which locks up the press.

I use a Hornady LNL with Hornady dies, Winchester 9mm brass, Federal SP-Match primers. The problem started after I switched to these primers as they were the only ones I could buy during the Great Primer Scare.

I know that I can buy a spring-loaded Dillon die that pings the primers out, but I hope there is a solution using my current Hornady die.

Any ideas? :what:

you need to use up the 1000 primes so, at some point in the cycle when the base is moving back down perhaps move the case a taste whit your free hand thus ruining the alignment. it will slow your production down, but it is perhaps better than getting jammed up randomly.

place a bullet at the seating station and, unless you have very large hands, move the de-primed case a taste against the spring with your index finger. little to no lost time.

and its only for the balance of the 1000; hoping you did not buy more than 1 box...

The first thing I would try is to adjust the depriming pin out (deaper) a bit if there is room, to make sure it pushes the primer free of the pocket completely. This has always fixed any problems with incomplete primer removal I have had in the past.

Almost all my old handgun die sets deprime and bell in the second die.

Compressed air from the expander plug blows them out & off with enough force to ricochet around the primer catcher a few times before they settle down.

I guess sometimes older is better.

Here's how I sloved that with my Dillon dies and Blazer brass, remove decap pin and cut off the stem from the base, get a pack of Lyman pins put the cut off base and the
Lyman pin back in die, worked 100% with the Dillon and Blazer brass. Lyman pins are a smaller dia.

Looking at a picture of Hornady dies that should be doable, can drop a couple Lyman pins in the mail if you want to try it, another thing that might help is rounding the tip more

Check the pin for a sharp edge. It is sticking between the anvils legs. It needs to be slightly rounded, but not tapered.

I also suggest you look at the tip of the decapping pin and make sure it is rounded and not sharp or pointed.

Sounds like leventy leven different discrete solutions. Aren't you glad you asked?

My .45acp set is as rc describes. Love it. Can't understand the change.

I just ran into this problem with my RCBS 9mm decapping/resizing die in my 550b. The solutions was easy. Just take a piece of sand paper or dremel with a polishing bit and polish down the last couple millimeters of the pin. Also polish the end of the decapping Pin and add a little bit more taper to the point of the pin (the transition area from the rod to the point). DO NOT Sharpen it. After I polished the end of the pin I did not experience anymore stuck primers.

Thanks
Mike

I too just experienced this with a brand new set of rcbs dies. Seems it happens 1 out of 20 or so rounds.
Moving the pin in/out didn't help but I'll try polishing it up today instead.
