Saw an episode on COPS years ago and a man was struck in the leg by a 9mm bullet and it bounced off, don't know if it punctured his pants but he had a bruise at most. What would cause this?

9mm is, after all, a .45 set to stun.

But, no real man would be caught dead with a 9mm. Actually, he knows he would be caught dead with a 9mm, because 9mm is a .45 set to stun.

:p

What would cause this?

Any number of things. Luck, an under-charged round, the victim's distance from the shooter, the victim's angle from the shooter, any barriers that the round may have passed through before the round hit the victim, etc, etc, etc.

A number of years ago I set up a piece of 3/8 plywood as a target backing. We leaned it against a tree and then shot with a .38 Special from a reasonable distance. Every round I shot bounced off the plywood and hit me in the chest. It wasn't hard enough to do anything damaging, but they just bounced off this piece of wood.

I don't recall the load, but we stepped back a few yards and it poked through the plywood with no problem. Sometimes the particular angle just doesn't work. I have no reason, but accept that some very odd things can happen when it comes to shooting.

I once shot an aluminum can at about 25 yards with a .357 mag and it didn't move, but I could see the hole. I walked over and picked up the can the bullet was still inside the can. There wasn't even a mark on the other side where the bullet hit. You just have to accept it.

Um...after the first one hit you, how many more did you shoot that kept hitting you in the chest? I know I'm a little slow on the uptake sometimes but I like to think I would stop after the first one.

I think I saw that COPS and my thought at the time was that it couldn't have been shot directly at him. It probably had already gone through something or deflected off of something.

look at utube, under 50 caliber. There is one where the guy is laying down taking a long shot, and the bullit ricochet, comes back and hit him in the head, he was shooting is what looked like a rock quarry. There is another one or two where the shooter looses the gun completley.

I REMEMBER THIS EPISODE!
Big ol Black Guy! Calls the Cops. A drive by occurs while the cops are THERE!
The guy stands up and picks 1 or 2 bullets out of his leg. He's like "I'm street tough! Gonna take more than a 9 to hurt this Brutha".
He was a riot. Nice big guy dealing with a bad neighborhood. Was amazing to me! Guy must have had some tough freaking skin, and NO WAY were those hollow points!
Some super cheep target rounds, or something?
Wait..... maybe it was a .22? I don't remember. But it was really wierd, scary, and funny all at once!

There was a well known case in Denver 20 years or so ago when the police still carried .38s. A man with a shotgun was firing at the cops from behind a cheap aluminum storm door, Several cops fired back with their service revolvers but the rounds failed to penetrate the thin aluminum door.

I don't think I can Google something that old but I remember it well, the local newscasts had reports from the scene with video of the dented but not penetrated door. Soon after that the Denver police got rid of their revolvers... I think they went to 9mm autos.

I think it has more to do with some government committee's choice of ammo. You'll have a hard time convincing me that .45ACP penetrates anything better than 9mm.

Maybe .45 hits harder, but it don't poke deeper holes...

Wow, it only took the third response before somebody made a crack about 9 mm. Must be a new record!

...and I doubt any of them will take you up on an offer to "stun" them with a 9mm.

It's a joke, from a recent post on here about the "Ten Best Guns ever made".
