So,this occured to me on the way home tonight.

Let's say I have a Michigan CHL.I move to Florida & start the paperwork process but I do not have either a Fl resident or non-resident CHL yet.I understand that Fl recognizes a Mi CHL.

My question is this.I'm no longer a resident of Mi & I'm not yet approved for CHL by the State of Fl.Would I be in violation of the law for carrying while I wait for my new,Fl liscence?Even though my Mi CHL is still "valid" & I have my Mi drivers liscence(ID card)?

Is it still "valid" after you move out of the state? My guess is soon as you moved, it became invalid. Could you tell a cop that pulls you over that you are a MI resident with a MI permit? Sure. Would you be lying? Yes. Might he ask more questions and might he find out you really live in FL now? Possible. Could you just tell him you were a MI resident and have a MI permit and you are just waiting for your FL permit? Sure. Does he have to be cool about it and let you go? No.

You just have to figure out what the risks are and evaluate them yourself. I once carried illegally in the PRK as I was waiting for my permit to be processed. Maybe that was a dumb thing to do now that I think back on it as if I had been caught, I would most certainly had my permit yanked before I got it. Luckily I never was caught. Will you be that lucky or is it a gamble you want to take. Again, only you can answer those questions. Good luck.

Just hold on to your MI drivers license and CHL until you get your FL CCW. I think you could apply for it before you move as a non-resident and probably have it in hand before you even entered the state.

You arent legally required to switch over your residency until youve been here some period of time. It was either 30 days or 90 days. I waited about 9 months when I moved to CA and about 3 months when I moved to FL.

The whole point of reciprocity is that you can still be a "Michigan Resident" and carry. The trick is to do it before your tags expire.

i think the only way this could possibly come back to bite you in the rear is if you actually have to shoot someone and go to court and the DA decides to press charges. then they will dig up your limbo status and argue that you shouldn't have been carrying in the first place. so just don't shoot anyone until your FL CHL comes through and you'll be ok. :)

Easiest and most reliable thing to do is call up the state attorney general's office in Florida and ASK. They will even send you a written opinion if you request it! I have yet to find an AG's office that didn't help out.
