How do you guys keep a cased rifle in your truck from turning into a brown seven to eight pount iron oxide bar?

Do you oil hell outta them before you case them? Bring them in every night? I guess I don't know how to avoid the rust issue here in multi-seasonal Iowa.

For one, don't keep it in a case. It will handle temp and humidity changes a lot better if it has air around it. Rifle cases tend to absorb the oil and hold the dampness against the steel.

If you must keep it in something, use a solicone impregnated gun sock. Walmart has them.

Left a POS Remington Viper in my trunk for years---yes years-----with minimal rust to the metal parts-----cleaned it up with Break Free before I traded it off-----looked pretty good.

No case.

I left it back there because it was a nasty POS gun and I didn't care what happened to it----even through all that---it still went bang every time. Go figure.

No cases for me! Just keep up with any rust spots...

Plus my AR-15's don't rust(except for the removable carry handle), and that is easily remedied with the some TLC and CLP:)...The AK is a different matter all together as it's exterior rusts in as little as a week in the trunk.

I find the best cases for truck storage are the traditional fleece lined ones. These seem to keep the rifle at a good ambient temp and wick off any condensation. I use a long fleece-lined "sock" stlye case from Dixie Gun Works for my long Mosins and a smaller side opening fleece-lined bag for my shorter rifles. For my Mossberg I just use an assault rifle case but then again a bit of rust on that beasty isn't a problem.

I've tried the "no case" option but unless I bring it in and rub it down every other day or so Alaska will have her way with the rifle. The inside of the truck cab temp changes from as cold as twenty below zero to fifty above as it freezes up and thaws out every day, which causes a truly amazing amount of condensation and seems to rust the bejesus out of anything in the cab. The only way to prevent this would be to lock the rifle in an unheated box in the bed, which I know some folks do. This solves the problem of massive temp. variations.

I never bother with a case. I do keep a rag and a can of preservative in a coffee can, with lid, behind the seat. The stocks are well waxed...Essex
