I like my Firesight, but hate the big gaping hole left on one side of the sight tower. I find it difficult to believe that Williams couldn't add something to fill in the gap. I know it is just a $100 rifle, but I'd at least like mine not to look thrown together, so I set about to fix the problem.
The screw that holds the sight in place is 8-32 threaded, so I went to the hardware store and bought a few in different lengths. I experimented with nuts and lock nuts to see how it looked. Finally, I hit on a solution.
I took one of the 8-32 pan-head screws like came with the sight and cut off the threads. Then I chucked it in the drill press and drilled a hole through the center. Next, I threaded this hole to 8-32 and filed the edges smooth. Lining it up with the hole in the tower, I screwed a longer screw throught the firesight and out the other side, then into the homemade cap. As I tightened the screw, it pulled the cap tighter into the hole. About 1/16" of the longer screw stuck out the end of my cap, so this was filed off. Some flat black Krylon to match the Duracoat on my SKS and the project was finished.
It shouldn't cost Williams but a few more pennies or even a dollar to supply a similiar cap to make the sight unit more visually pleasing.
