Marshall,
Respectfully, I think you're looking at the article with the wrong expectation. I didn't post the article because I thought it was a great pro-gun screed. I viewed it as the story of a guy who was about as far away from involvement with the "gun culture" as you can get, who wrote about his brief foray into that culture and the reasons for it. As a journalist, he presented some of the views of both pro and anti gun people in a way that I thought was, at least, balanced. As I see it, the article is very positive for RKBA even though the writer didn't become a total convert and is ambiguous about his own ability to use a firearm in a self-defense situation. It's positive because he got a bit of the "good" message to an audience that would have not have read it, much less given it any thought, coming from a know pro-gun "conservative" writer. So, here's one of their own, saying, "But if the police won't or can't protect me and my friends, taking matters into my own hands doesn't seem irrational anymore." For some of the readers, it probably won't change any minds, especially if they are the pacifist types. But, for some it may be a baby step or seed that will lead to reconsidering their guns = evil mode of thinking.
