A gun buying dilemma

Alright, so I live in Orange County, California. That means I am subject to the "One gun a month" law which makes some of my gun buying plans a little difficult.

What I would like to do is own a .22 pistol and a 1911 before the year is out. Unfortunately, I might not get a chance to buy both and might have to settle for just one.

I'm having a hard time deciding between the two; I would love to buy a 1911 on the 100th year anniversary, but I'd get more mileage out of a .22.

Now, I suppose I could solve this problem by buying a .22 conversion kit for a 1911, but I hear those are a bit finicky.

Thoughts? Advice?

Get the 1911 while it is still 2011. Then get the .22 conversion. My Buddy has the .22 conversion kit for his 1911. Yes it was finicky at first but once he got the ammo it liked he enjoys it. I have a G22 and have the .22 conversion also. It has been back to the company twice and it is getting much better. They are standing behind their product and I am happy. Shot 500 rounds of .22 one morning from my carry gun. That's a lot of cheap practice and FUN! Good luck,
Mike

M1911 century anniversary. A 22 pistol can be had at any time of any year. You won't live to see the M1911 second century celebration.

The 2011 model 1911 will still be available in 2012, I would assume. But getting a century anniversary model the year after the century anniversary is like missing your wedding anniversary and trying to "make it up next month, honey." Well, maybe not quite that bad...

Anyway, I'd say get the 2011 1911 this month, and the .22 conversion kit when you can. Best of both.

Roll the dice. See what number pops up. Go to that post # and do what that guy suggests. Problem solved.

Another thing to consider is that consignment and private party sales are excepted from the one handgun per month law.

So if you're willing to save a bundle and buy used, you might still be able to fill your shopping list by Christmas.

Why can't you get the 1911 in November and the .22 in December?
I may be traveling for the holidays.

It looks like the vox populi has spoken. A 1911 it will be.

Now, what's a good (and not too expensive) conversion kit?

Virginia is limited to 1 per month- unless you have a CHP and then you are good to go.
Or you could move to a free state and buy both...at the same time!
Arizona isn't. You could buy ten guns a month here, if you wanted to; or ten guns in one transaction, for that matter.

Only VA, MD, and CA have a you may only purchase one firearm per month rule.

Good choice on the 1911, OP. No personal experience owning a conversion kit, but if I had one already, it would be the one Kimber offers.

My Kimber conversion is the most reliable 22 pistol I own. Not as finicky about ammo as my buckmark or ruger. Very accurate too. I've got a Grand Raptor that it lives on most of the time because I like it's trigger so much.

The only two gun laws I hate in my state:

#1: Can't OC a gun with a non-fixed stock or with a mag in it bigger than 20 rounds.
** I just got used to practicing and using 20 rounds instead of 30.
#2: 1 handgun a month for those without carry permits (I'm not a handgun man but it strikes me as unfair and stupid.).
** Not a handgun man, so I guess I'm fortunate.

Update: I bought a GSG .22 1911 today. Also, I have discovered that the paperwork is a PITA.
