The thread about the movie “The hills have eyes” got me thinking about the guns that you actually NEED in life. So here are my needs

Close Range (0-50ish yards) Handgun Just about any would do. Shotgun, again just about any would do but a short HD setup would probably be preferable.

Close Range Rifle (0-200 yards in my case) Something like a 16” AR with quick acquisition optics. Has enough power at the close range but not overpowered.

Mid Range Rifle (200-600ish yards) Something along the lines of a .308 AR with a 20"ish barrel and optics. Has a good balance of range, power, and firepower. Put rounds down range quickly and make them count.

Long Range (600+ yards) Bolt gun territory. Highly accurate high powered rifle to reach out there, no need to be quick.

Hunting guns- that Mid Range rifle would be a nice dear gun and a hunting shotgun would work out. Don’t forget the 22lr eather.

There are modifications like having a 20” AR for ranges up to about 400 yards then switching over to a bolt gun, but these are just my ideas and probably aren’t worth .02.

Handguns:
Springfield Armory makes excellent autoloaders. As far as revolvers go, a Ruger GP100 or Smith 686 with a 4in barrel would be good choices.

Short Range Rifles:
Any of Arsenal's AK-47s would work great.

Shotguns:
Remington 870 Express 12GA with a field barrel, rifled barrel and 18in barrel.

Mid Range Rifles:
Springfield Armory M1As. You'll spend just as much if not more on an AR.

Long Range Rifles:
Ruger M-77 in 300 WinMag.

22LR Rifle:
Ruger 10/22;)

Most folks go happily through life without ever once "needing" a gun. Even those that have had need for one made do with what they had.

1. Small 9mm, .40, .45acp, 10mm ,.357mag or .44mag handgun, concealable but accurate. Biggest caliber you can handle, most expensive cartridge you can afford to shoot and control, and largest gun you can effectively conceal.

2. Homeland Defense Rifle (HDR) of choice. AR/Mini/M14/M1Garand/FAL/etc.

3. Game rifle. Bolt Action .243, .308, .30-06, .300WinMag, .338WinMag or .375H&H, depending on where you live. Only if your HDR isn't powerful enough to routinely kill local game cleanly.

That's it. All the rest are toys.

0-10 yards personal defense: 18.5" pistol grip 870 12GA
0-25 yards personal defense: Taurus 65 .357MAG
10-50 yards hunting: 26" 870 12GA
25-100 yards hunting or personal defense: SKS 7.62x39 w/ open sights
25-150 yards hunting: Marlin 30AS 30/30
150-500 yards: Mossberg 100ATR .30-06
500+ yards: I need some training :uhoh:

Close Range (0-50ish yards)
Handgun. Preferably a .45. Personally I'd go with a Springfield Armory 1911. Shotgun would be better for more power.

Close Range Rifle (0-200 yards)
AR or AK. Gets the job done.

Mid Range Rifle (200-600ish yards)
Scoped semi auto. Maybe something like an M1A, M16, Garand, etc.

Long Range (600+ yards)
Barrett .50 cal. Just because I imagine that would be a lot of fun and it's illegal here.

Hunting guns-
Deer: .270
Duck: 12 gauge
Rabbit: .22

I disagree. There is no way I would want a handgun for a 50 yard shot, or even a 35 yard shot. Plus even at closer ranges, where a handgun can hit reliably, a rifle is still easier to shoot and hits harder. To me a handgun is for when you don't have time to reload and they are out of bayonet range, or when you arn't expecting trouble and the rifle is too heavy, or for climbing ladders.

Overpowered is your friend. The two things I can see an intermediate cartridge rifle for are greater magazine capacity, and more rounds you can hump around. Both are very worthy considerations, enough so I call a tie for close range rifle between AR/AK type intermediate, or FAL, M-14, G3 type serious rifle

Just like before, this is stretching a .223, but it will work. But then so will a serous rifle caliber like 308 in a semi. Either-or

Long Range (600+ yards) Bolt gun territory. Highly accurate high powered rifle to reach out there, no need to be quick.

True, but very few shooters can handle that range no matter how snazzy the gear. Those that can, a M1A fancified would work to. For me, that range is for wasting ammo, making noise to get someone's attention, or throwing lead to keep someone's head down and praying to get lucky. For that, both an intermeidate cartridge arm like AR/AK will do fine, and so will a serious rifle cartridge semi like FN-FAL or whatnot.

hmmm,I was watching my taped show of survivorman earlier....I think in a certain situation Id say flaregun as a one gun need!:p

ok ok...Im gonna pick ONE firearm If I had to have just one...tick tock tick tock..Im thinking..ok,I would want a M1a-M14.

Good for target shooting and FUN.
Good for defense
Good for long range,Im talking open sights,I would'nt try to shoot past 200 yds, though the rifle can,not me
Adequate for hunting,if need be.

my g26 for everyday carry, will be supplemented by my Ultra Carry when it proves reliable.

My SA Loaded for when I have on more clothing.

My Mossberg 500 to repel home invaders and my [soon to be built] AR to shoot the invaders as they run away

A ruger 22 in pistol and rifle form for fun and practice. So basically I could throw everything in a case, a backpack full of ammo, and go. I'd rather have fewer guns filling more rolls than a different gun for each specific zombie insurgent potential scenario...

That's all I really need, and that's all I have....

Let me explain this the way I've explained it to the wife, you guys really need to improve your thought processes. :) Now keep in mind this is a minimum, and you should probably have spare rifles for the bullet weights you shoot the most.

Rifles:
<72 gr. bullets - .223 ( you could actually divide this into 45 gr./52 gr./62 gr.)
80-105 gr. bullets - 6x45 (target) and .243 (hunting)
110-120 gr. bullets - crap, I'm missing one, guess I need to go to the gun show, a .257 should fit in this space nicely.
130-140 gr. bullets - .270
145-150 gr. bullets - .308
154-162 gr. bullets- 7x57
165-180 gr. bullets - 30-06
180-220 gr. Bullets - fast - .300 Win.
180-220 gr. bullets - slow - 7.65 x 53
225-250 gr. bulelts - .338 Win
300-400 gr. bullets - .50 Beowulf
400-500 gr. bulelts - .458 Win.

This way you can match the ammunition precisely to the game, very important for humane hunting. And if you don't hunt you can match ammunition to the distance you are shooting for various wind speed and humidity conditions.

And don't even get me started on explaining the pistols!

Eh.

Close Range (0-50ish yards)
Close Range Rifle (0-200 yards in my case)
Hunting guns-

A 12 gauge shotgun with a replacement slug barrel would work fine for this.

Mid Range Rifle (200-600ish yards)
Long Range (600+ yards)

'Mid' range is 200-600 yards? 600+ yards? Who are you kidding? I realize that long range has different connotations for different situations, but that's a little ridiculous.

I define 'need' as, if I were in a particular situation, my life would end without this particular thing. If I were in so sorry a spot that I had to shoot my way out of it, I wouldn't feel the need for five different weapons. A single well-equipped shotgun with a modest variety of ammunition would be more than adequate for getting out of dodge. Of course, that is around here, where cover is readily available at nearly all ranges. Yet, even in the open desert there is rarely the need for a 200+ yard capable weapon system simply for preserving your life- at that range, hiding and skulking away seems like a better option.

Fortunately, need is not my reason for getting guns. :D
I'm a big milsurp fan, so I'd probably settle for a sporterized, accurized Mosin Nagant rifle for all work beyond 20 yards. Inside of that the pucker factor demands a shotgun.
