How many guns do you NEED?

1 3" .357 Magnum revolver. Smith/Ruger/Colt whatever. I cannot think of anything I would ever need to do that I couldn't do with that gun.

Just for fluff add in a 12 gauge pump shotgun. Let's say 870.

I just cannot fathom ever "needing" anything more than that.

In the real world...
P3AT to keep clipped to my waistband
12-ga pump (18.5") to leave at home
AK or AR in case the meteor does hit in 2030
And maybe a .22 (NAA?)

In a perfect world... I wouldn't need any of them, but I'd be able to play with whichever I felt like.

In a nearly-perfect world... add to the above list the following...
100-cal black powder revolver
Serbu shorty
Carbon-15, drum mags, lots of tracers
substitue a Jackhammer for the pump
actual, working Arasaka Gong (10-ga semiauto shotpistol)
Barett M82a2 or Maadi-Griffin semiauto
some kind of energy weapon :D
Something large and impractical, with a deep "BOOM" of a report that you hear in your chest more than in your ears. The 100 may fill this need.
And probably a 1911, because they'll always be the best of their kind.

[EDIT] Oh. A GAU-8a wouldn't go amiss either! ^_^

Preacherman pretty much nailed the list.

The barest of essentials would be what I would take with me if I was buggin out. His and her pistols, my 870 and my SKS. Comon wisdom dictates that I should take on of the bolt actions and the Marlin '93 LA, but I am not comfortable enough with either one to justify toting it in an emergency, so it comes down to rifle, shotgun, and pistols.

My collection of .22LR is certainly lacking.

In reality I think "Need" varies from person to person. As long as Californians are denied our right to carry, there is no need for a CCW pistol, so I only buy large frame autos. If lived where CCWs were availible, my priorities would quickly change.

Same for hunting weapons. People who live where it is illegal to hunt with a rifle don't "Need" a rifle for that. (Although they might feel a need for a rifle for two legged critters.) Suddenly, though, a slug gun might appear on their "need" list.

And as for "What do you need", I think most of us can agree that the question is one of practicality, not a challenge towards 2a rights.

When the subject is firearms, specifically handguns, Want & Need are equivalent.

Number of Guns?

When the day comes when I go to work in the morning and can't shut the door behind me because of all my guns, then I guess I have enough

I agree with everyone who said that they need ALL of their firearms.

I need all of mine just as I need all the words I know (and some that I don't know yet) in order to fully utilize my Freedom of Speech etc.

If you want to talk about favorite firearms, that's a different thread altogether.

1.36 C&B Duckfoot pistol (3 barrels that shoot all at the same time)

And plan to buy a bunch more because I NEED them...

All that I have are a definite MUST! Also I may have a future need for a LAW for the possibility of a T-Rex wandering onto my path, or maybe a phase-plasma rifle in the 40 watt range. Heck, how bout a BFG 9000? :what:

1. Glock 26
2. Glock 34
3. Bushmaster AR-15
4. Springfield M1A
5. Mossberg 590A1

if the NFA was repealed

1. Glock 26
2. Glock 34 in full auto
3. Sig 552
4. HK G3
5. Mossberg 590A1

What I personally feel I need is a good service pistol like the Springfield 1911 in .45 that I currently have. It serves me well for concealed carry, vehicle travel, and defense of my home.

I need a good 12ga for hunting, home defense, and recreation. The 870 fits all of these needs.

I need a good military style rifle for homeland defense. I'm not so naive as to think that I live in a nice stable world where wide spread trouble isn't a possibility. Military travel has opened my eyes. For this role I've chosen the AR-15. I have a CAR style Bushmaster and an Oly A2 match. I only NEED one of them, until one them breaks.

I need a good bolt-action rifle for food procurement and self-defense. For this role I have the Winchester M70 with the BOSS system in 30-06.

I have several other firearms but these are the guns I think I need for specific purposes.

Need should never be a factor for freedom loving individuals...
Please explain that one to me and also explain how it relates to guns! Is there some magic thing about freedom or about freedom loving people that makes them impervious to need? As functioning humans we all have both needs and wants.

As for how many guns I need, I guess a lot would depend upon the situation in which I find myself. The bare minimum I can think of for any tactical situation would be two.

1. Handgun (semi-automatic)
2. Longarm (shotgun or rifle depending on situation)

If you mean something like how many handguns could I need to cover each and every situation in which I could find myself, then the absolute minimum would be three.

1. Handgun
2. Pump Shotgun with interchangeable barrels
3. Rifel in the 30 caliber range

As to how many firearms I want; well as the fancy hits me I will consider buying another to add to my small collection.

Barring long-term SHTF (i.e. where hunting becomes a survival requirement), I would be perfectly satisfied with these two:

1) "Service Pistol"- Full size, accurate, semi auto with a decent cartridge and mag capacity. Bedside gun. With some effort, it can be concealed.

2) "Battle Carbine"- AR15 (M4 style) or AK with a suitable combat optic. In my view THE preferred weapon for all threats from 1-300 meters.

But since this is America and "need" isn't a factor, I'd add the following justifiable wants:

3) Scoped .30 cal or higher boltgun- Hunting/Long range "counter"sniper work (post-SHTF).

4) Ruger 10/22-- Its a .22. No explanation should be needed.

5) 2nd AR- 20" A3 or A4. Set up with a long-range scope, it could backstop either the Battle Carbine or the boltgun, if need be.

6) M1 Garand. Cause I want one for the history of it, and it could also back up the boltgun or the ARs if they all went down.

7) Commander 1911. More concealable than a double-stack .40 or 9mm, but still powerful and accurate. The everyday concealed carry gun.

8) Shotgun. Since M4geries are legal, I really don't see a combat role for the shotgun. It could still be useful for hunting though, which I guess rates a (low) spot on the list.

And a copy of almost every other weapon firing common ammo would fall somewhere between number 9 and infinity...

How many guns do I need ? I need as many as my second amendment rights say I can have.

I need;
1. .38 spl 4" for target shooting- proficiancy/cheaper ammo
2. .357 2 1/2" selfdefence more punch
3. 1911 rapid fire big bore
4. .500 Mag cause the voices tell me to
All the rest to satisfy my overdeveloped ego that tells me I need every one I've ever heard about.
good shootin
kid

why! what have you.....who have you ... no I didnt buy.... hey are you my wife!!!!

Well, a fella's gotta have a shotgun for birds, and gotta have a deer rifle. Might need a Big deer rifle and a Little deer rifle, in case you figure you might want Big deer like elk or meese.

Gotta have a .22 rfle for self-defense against the deadly tin can. Probably oughta have a .22 pistol, as well.

Can't go wrong with a 1911, but a good .357 revolver gives a feeling of comfort and security, as well...

And then there's "stuff". :D "Stuff" has been known to fill up gunsafes and hide behind closet doors and all that.

But then there comes a time to start easing out from the world of "stuff" as the years accumulate, and you're back to the "usin' guns" and all those wondrous memories...
